The King's Law

Henceforth, from the date of this writ, the following laws are to be enacted.  
  1. Taking another civilized life is to be punishable up to and including the death of the offender. ADDENDUM: any murder in self-defense shall not fall under this law. 
  2. Stealing another civilized being's belongings shall result in complete repayment for the item(s) stolen and return of the item(s) in questions. ADDENDUM: if the item(s) are no longer in the possession of the thief then they will pay triple the value of the item(s) in question. ADDENDUM 2: theft of priceless items shall result in a punishment of up to 400 years of servitude and a fine of up to 100,000 gold pieces.
  3. Impersonation of the King, Queen, or any member of their family or court shall result in imprisonment for life and a 10,000 gold piece fine.
  4. Taxation of 5% of your total wealth is due twice each year, the first of Perdition and the 31st of Ire. Official tax collectors will present a writ of taxation sealed with the King's sigil. ADDENDUM: taxation may be requested more than twice per year in times of war. ADDENDUM 2: taxation collected must total at least 1 gold piece. 
  5. Waylaying a traveling merchant will result in a slow, painful death in front of your loved ones. 
  6. Destructive magic shall not be cast within the walls of a civilized settlement. Those caught casting destructive magics are subject to a fine with the amount determined by the property destruction caused by the spell. ADDENDUM: other forms of magic are permitted within civilized settlements, any reports of destructive magic that are deemed false will result in the reporter receiving a fine of up to 100 gold pieces. 
  7. All non-perishable goods must be accepted for full price by the merchant within 10 days of the sale if they are deemed defective by the purchaser. All claims can be disputed by the merchant in front of the settlement's authority. ADDENDUM: damage caused by battle does not constitute a defective product. 
  8. Members of guilds are not subject to taxation. ADDENDUM: guilds are to be taxed 3% of the total earning of their members twice per year following the taxation laws. 
  9. In the absence of a true blood heir, the line of succession will be broken. In the case of a broken line of succession, a new King may be elected by the representatives of each city. This King shall rule until a true blood heir is found.

This document was released on 1 Perdition, 0 in conjunction with the Calendar. It has always served as a set of laws to help guide the continent of Atera.
