Catacombs

The Catacombs beneath Absalom are ancient, sprawling, convoluted, and nightmarishly complex. As Absalom continued to rebuild on top of itself over the centuries, countless structures and groups built, joined, and evolved layer upon layer of crypts and tombs beneath the city, digging deeper and deeper into the bedrock supporting Kortos Isle. Absalom’s Catacombs network is enormous—so big that huge plots of it are portioned, privatized, and sold to the highest bidder. Many such plots are owned by various prominent churches of Absalom. This was especially true for the church of Aroden, which had massive holdings in the Catacombs up until its deity’s sudden death over a century ago. In the chaos that followed Aroden’s disappearance, as Absalom-based priests and worshippers abandoned their old ways and built new lives in a changed city, the proprietorship of many church-owned properties, including swaths of the Catacombs, became complicated or entirely unclear. Many of the known crypts are monitored and guarded by the Graycloaks for "leaks".
