Firearms in the 48th Century
The past fifty years have seen impressive improvements in the availability of firearms. The Gunworks of Alkenstar quickly revealed itself to be manufacturing superior weapons that had not been allowed to be imported beyond the borders. But the rise of the Green Dragon Gunworks forced their hand in an attempt to stay competitive. Since then many gunsmiths have opened throughout the countries clustered around the Inner Sea, including advanced weapons such as revolvers, lever-action repeaters and rifles. Many inner sea militaries are seeing firearms replace crossbows and formations of pikes and musketeers are becoming common tactics.
Farther from the Inner Sea, firearms are mostly imported and remain expensive, though older single-shot muskets and pistols are common enough. The bow is still the predominant ranged weapon for most.
In Brevoy, there is a division among the nobility on attitudes toward guns. The lords of Issia, with their background as river pirates, generally favor the innovation, while the Swordlords of Rostland are more resistant. Some Swordlords feel that firearms make war too terrible and too lacking in opportunity for honor, while others take a more pragmatic view that it is an excellent weapon for levies, but no fit tool for a lord. At the beginning of the Uprising, Royalist armies were far more likely to contain muskets than the rebel armies were. However, by the end of the war, the rebels lords had largely abandoned their objections and were making extensive use of stolen firearms.
Mechanically speaking, the firearms listed on page 26 of the Fantasy AGE Companion are available in the setting, but are rare and expensive in Brevoy.
