Necromancers specialize in the forces between life and death, wielding the energies that animate all living things. They can drain vitality from the living or bind it into the dead, raising them as tireless, obedient servants.
Most people see necromancers as menacing, or even villainous, due to the close association with death. Not all necromancers are evil, but the forces they manipulate are considered taboo by many.
Necromancy Savant
Level 3 feature
Choose two
Wizard spells from the Necromancy school, each of which must be no higher than level 2, and add them to your spellbook for free.
In addition, whenever you gain access to a new level of spell slots in this class, you can add one Wizard spell from the Necromancy school to your spellbook for free. The chosen spell must be of a level for which you have spell slots.
Grim Harvest
Level 3 feature
You can reap the life energy from creatures you slay. When you reduce an enemy to 0 Hit Points with a Necromancy spell, choose yourself or a creature you can see within 30 feet of you. The chosen creature gains Temporary Hit Points equal to the level of the spell slot plus your Intelligence modifier (minimum of 1 Temporary Hit Point). You also gain this benefit if an Undead you control reduces an enemy within 10 feet of you to 0 Hit Points, as if you cast a level 1 spell.
Undead Thralls
Level 6 feature
You always have the
Animate Dead spell prepared. Whenever you cast the spell, you can target one additional corpse or pile of bones, creating another Zombie or Skeleton, as appropriate.
Whenever you create an Undead using a Necromancy spell, the creature’s Hit Point maximum is increased by an amount equal to your Wizard level, and it adds your Proficiency Bonus to its damage rolls.
Inured to Undeath
Level 10 feature
You have spent so much time with undeath and the forces around it, that you have become able to both endure and tolerate some of their worst aspects. You have Resistance to Necrotic damage, and when you use Arcane Recovery, your Exhaustion level, if any, decreases by 1.
If you would drop to 0 Hit Points and there is an Undead you control within 15 feet of you, you can as a Reaction, have that Undead die and you instead be reduced to 1 Hit Point. Once you use this benefit, you can't use it again until you finish a Long Rest.
Improved Thralls
Level 14 feature
When you cast the
Animate Dead spell, it has the following improvements.
Any Corpse Will Do. You can animate the corpse of any Medium or Small creature that isn’t Undead, instead of only Humanoids. The resulting Undead always uses the statistics of a Skeleton or Zombie.
Loyal Thrall. You can choose an Undead you created or reasserted your control over, and designate it as your loyal thrall. The chosen creature remains under your control indefinitely, and you can mentally command it without a Bonus Action. Whenever it deals Physical damage, you can make it deal Necrotic damage instead. If you have the Incapacitated condition, your loyal thrall will move to protect your body from harm, but won’t attack.
If it dies, for as long as it remains your loyal thrall, you can reanimate it as if it was not Undead. You can only have one loyal thrall, and choosing a new creature to be your loyal thrall causes the previous one to die.
