Don't go down on Rivard Street Myth in After the Fog | World Anvil

Don't go down on Rivard Street

Yes I know, it's inconvenient to get around if you just want to cross it, but if you value your life, do it. Or take a highway. Or better yet, don't cross it. There's a reason not that much highways are built over this street. Among all the cursed street, it is the most enigmatic, thus the most dangerous.

The Disappearance of Hasune Miko

The first event occured with the sudden disappearance of Hasuna. She was lively, perhaps a bit exuberant, but certainly a great singer, with a voice as sweet as her fists were deadly. She was on a mission after a creature was sighted in the vicinity of the street. A very simple task that her team had successfully carried out multiple times. As it was common for them, they split up right after coming in the area, keeping only radio contact.

Even alone, they had little to fear. After all, the [name] team had the best fighters outside the fog, and even alone they were able to stand their ground against a mere beast while waiting for reinforcement. The last one to see Hasune was Keria, the sniper. They parted way at the crossing between Artwater street and Rivard street. Keria continued East while her friend headed North. Perhaps she would have noticed the absence of communication from Hasune sooner if she had not stumbled upon the creature.

It was barely even a fight. She disposed of the matter rather quickly with the help of Darian, another team member. After everyone gathered, they finally noticed something was wrong with how Hasune has been silent for a while. Keria tracked her steps back to the crossing, still no sign of Hasune. Out of the six teammates, they decided that three would go North, two South in the case the vanished had decided to backtrack, and one to return and tell the commandement the main issue was solved but that there were complication.

They expected another creature to have surprised Hasune. Some of them are ambushers that lure their preys into dangerous traps. If it had already killed their friend, the least they could do was to avenge her.

None of them came back. They all vanished without a trace, just like Hasune. Observers were sent to scout the ground from the heights, but they detected nothing. Not a trace of fighting, or any of the team's belongings. It was like the street was the same as when it was conquered back. Neither Hasune or the five people that went after her emerged from the street.

Now, this is not a second-hand story. I got it from Keria herself, the one they sent to report. Do not go bother her, she retired and decided to tell only me, so that I could tell the story in her stead.

They were not the only one to disappear like that. Before we knew what cursed streets were, a lot of children went there, some brave, some fools, in search of Hasune Miko. They were surveiled by observers, tasked with discovering the face of the threat. We believed for a long time that the culprit was a dreadful creature that killed the trespassers on its territory in an instant. As long as they were watched, the children down the street were safe. But should they leave the sight of observers for a mere instant, they were , goners. They could vanish in the blink of eye, litterally. I don't want to count how many people we lost to a mere street.

Final advice

Nowadays, we know better than to cross that street. We still have no idea where the disappeared have gone, or whether they are still alive or not. Although I have my idea on the topic. If you do have to cross it somehow, remembers that having an exterior watcher is key to survival. More than one, even. If they are in the street with you, it is no good as you all will disappear together. You must always stay in their line of sight, and they have to never blink at the same time. Beware nonetheless: since this is known, no one ever managed to get out of Rivard Street.

Cursed Streets

We thought that, after reconquering our city, we would be free to roam it freely. Of course, nothing is ever as simple as that. Cursed streets are no man's lands. There, the Mist sticks to the walls and the ground, like it made itself home. It is not as thick as in a real fog bank, most of the time it isn't even noticeable. But its effects are still strong, and the street is deeply altered. Such streets are given peculiar characteristics, mostly supernatural and harmful.
