The Broken Biosphere

Too bad all those people had to stay back on Earth...

=== NEWS REPORT // 20 December 2160 === Good evening. It is with our deepest sorrows that we announce the failure of our second attempt to construct a biosphere of larger scale. In our mission to create the future of humanity off-planet, it is our utmost wish to continue the development of biospheres in the event that we must persist our civilization off-planet. The world is changing, day by day, and we can see the detrimental effects of our activity on planet Earth. The biosphere will be evaluated and repurposed for further testing and possible future habitation as it orbits our sun. The Earth will continue to be our home, but we must expand beyond to secure the future of humanity. Starting as a coalition for science, we at the League for the Advancement of Humankind have worked tirelessly to change humanity for the better. We have had many successes and failures, with our first attempt to expand humankind in 2085 resulting in disaster. We have worked beyond planetary constraints, with the development of modern starship technology. We have developed superior computing and simulation technology. In 2150, we created the first successful off-planet colony, in our New Earth Biosphere. Our failures do not dampen the success of our future. Per Aspera ad Astra. ===

Purpose / Function

Constructed shortly after the finalization of the first biosphere in 2145, the broken biosphere was meant to house twice the capacity. The technology was new, and the L.A.H made haste with its construction. The original biosphere (New Earth) has a capacity of approximately 5,000,000 humans. The L.A.H had an ambitious plan to further expand off-planet colonies by constructing one that held double capacity. At the time, the exact time confirmation of the catastrophic asteroid collision was estimated (2175). To secure the future of humanity, the L.A.H constructed the second biosphere. The biospheres are meant to be a recreation of Earth in an environmentally simulated orbital mega-structure.

Alterations

Shortly after the discovery that the biosphere was too large to sustain human life, the L.A.H had attempted repair but ultimately failed. With access to starships, the L.A.H ended up converting the second biosphere into storage for spacecraft technology. The current Biospherians use it to store unused spacecraft, such as the three massive-scale Artemis starships.

Architecture

In past, the style of architecture could be referred to as heavily modern and futuristic. While not following a specific style of architecture in terms of aesthetic, biospheres are constructed with optimization and science in mind. The broken biosphere is a large sphere, constructed of panels of a thick, durable glass material bound together by a combination of tungsten and steel. Biospheres are made of mostly glass to allow for sunlight to reach through, and to provide views of space for its inhabitants.

History

After the construction of the first biosphere spanning from the early 2100s-2145, the L.A.H had successfully finalized biosphere technology. While the technology was still new, it proved sustainable when the colonization of the first biosphere proved to be successful. Due to the L.A.H's commitment to advancing humanity through space exploration, and the scientific understanding of probability for asteroid collision, it was decided upon to construct another biosphere. What the L.A.H did not realize, however, was that their simulation technology and materials would not be able to withstand a size almost double the original. The environmental simulation system could not sustain a structure nearly twice the size the original. The original thought was that the environmental simulation system could expand to simulate nearly any structure, and the L.A.H made a fatal mistake in being too hasty with the construction of the second biosphere.
The Hunk of Metal? Yeah, that's where they hide their starships. I wonder when they're going to send us away to rot in space, only for us to find a distant planet that we must call our home?

Author's Notes

Much of the discussion about the architecture and design/purpose of this biosphere apply to the New Earth biosphere as well. I'm working on the technology article which will contain more info on the science aspect of the biospheres. I hope this was interesting, as it's for a personal story I'm writing. It will definitely be revised as I change/add more content! (if you're reading this, thank you ;) )
