The Commission

The Commission was formulated by a ruling committee of the powerful criminal-families of the Continent, but also representative families of different cities across the southern coast – in the aftermath of the Calamity. Their hatred and damaged business in the case of the War of the Arcane Cities had hurt business, and after a certain time… it was through the power of a strangely honorific family of crime known as the Venturino. Unifying the discordant crime families within a centralised and single unit to promote business, unite against their competitors and to mediate discrepancies and rivalries within their own criminal community – their most important units were the ‘families’, made up of the strongest bosses that were the head of their local organisations. The traditional crimes of protection, extortion, gambling and prostitution were then greatly exceeded by the current circumstances of the aftermath of the Calamity and Arcane Wars; as there had been strict laws and prohibitions of mages and magic, and thus the Commission was making fortunes not only in bootlegging, assassination, but also smuggling magical items and even mages themselves – earning as it were, a traditional bond between different mage communities across the Continent before their new revolutionary rise afterward.   They are nefarious, in that the worst of them would condone the slave markets of Ankh’hera, and the Bronzimm Concord … but also that they were integral to some successes in wars between opposing sides of war; they were strictly neutral in terms of personal worship, and would bring their business to any that wouldn’t attract public attention from the law. Meaning cults and at times demonic worshippers, but never actively participated, merely doing business.   Their rivals and competitors are the Requisition and the pirates of the coast – the Requisition was simply a newer and more modern means of smuggling and tied more directly with the southern reaches of the continent. They were not as bloodthirsty, but they had dramatically greater access to high-profit contraband and smuggling resources, and less family-oriented and honourable of thieves.
