Magic Levels

A table descriptor to identify magic/tech level. This is to indicate the level of magic in a given society. Individuals can vary. Different cultures can have opposing and parallel descriptors:
  • e.g. In Harry Potter, two cultures side by side, one clearly ubiquitous and one is either perceived/incidental.
 
AGE DESCRIPTION
None For whatever reason this culture has no access to or belief in magic.
Perceived This culture believes in magic (to one degree or another) but the practice is false.
Incidental This culture doesn't actively use magic but it takes advantage of magic from other sources (natural, pre-existing, etc).
Miraculous Magic comes in bursts from a higher power or regular source. No power stored or summoned.
Shamanic Magic held by a few and used in a ritual way.
Academic Magic is studied, magic stored and summoned, may still be unreliable. Has not replaced technology.
Scientific Study common, understanding broad, research into artefacts and long term self sustaining spells begins.
Ubiquitous Advanced magic is so common in society that almost all people have access to it innately or through items. Sentient spells and reliable artefacts.
Master Universal mastery of high magic. magic spells may have replaced many citizens, casual extra-planar travel happens. Some citizens interact with higher beings regularly.
Impossible Average people have the ability to wholly alter reality, nearly unlimited capacity to create and destroy, see and travel to other dimensions, and pit themselves against god-like beings. (any civilization that gets close is usually destroyed by itself or by the Elder Gods)
