Chi - Spirit & Essence of Life
Spirit energy, otherwise known as the Spirit of Life, or the Spirit of the Wilds - referred to as Chi or Ki by monks, is the fifth element, the inner energy inside all living things. It is the spark in their hearts that connects the mortals even to the Elements.
The quintessential essence and spirit of life that seemed to possess sentience of its own within the world of Aetheus, was known as the World-Soul. This was a powerful primordial spirit of the world of Aeth that lingers after the reformation of Aetheus. A mass of life energy formulated from the moment of creation at the beginning of the universe, suffusing the world it slumbers within with their energies as generations of life live and dies upon it. The World Soul of Aetheus merged its energies with the Elemental Chaos, changing the fabric and reality of the world, and bonding the elements with the spirit of life. This was believed to be the reason how physical forms began to take the form of flesh within the world.
Speaking to a World-Soul was not like speaking to a mortal. It spoke in feelings, like that of a crumbling mountain range, a deep dark sea, or a sunrise.
Subtle energy, but Ki could be used by mortals to perform incredible feats by pushing the body to and beyond its physical limits. Mastery of ki gave one power over one's own body and over the bodies of others, and even to steal ki from others.
The Spirit of Life was variously considered to be similar to but distinct from the mental energy utilized in psionics, to be a form of psionic energy itself or magical energy that worked with psionics, and finally as a wholly primordial magical energy or one whose applications created magical effects. Of the magic that suffused the multiverse, Ki was the element that flowed through living bodies and depended strongly on the breath that linked the soul to the body. Thus, ki existed in all things that lived.
The Spirit of Life brings balance to fire, earth, air and water in the physical world and is the reason why Elementals within Aetheus are so chaotic is that, as it developed, the world-soul of Aeth consumed much of the planets Spirit after it collided with the tempestuous world of Theus. At that time to compensate for the chaos and destruction of life, the Spirit of Life consumed the energies of the Elemental Chaos, which changed the natural composition of life energy in all living things, and reinvigorated the amount of Spirit so much that it caused accelerated plant growth, giving rise to the Arbotan.
Spirit has also shown the ability to turn stone into flesh over time. The Agron were infused with spirit energy by the spores released upon the Arbotan Vangorvl's death, turning the Goron line into the form of the Ogronn, Ogres, Orcs and other lesser giant-kin over thousands of years.
Shamans and druids said that all things had a life, a power and a spirit. They are deeply involved with the spirits of the elements - earth, air, fire, water, and the Spirits of the Wilds - and they claimed they could sense the life force in earth and even seemingly dead stone. The Spirit was what gave shamans their connection to the elements, to others, and to themselves. The Spirit of Life is what granted the archdruids the strength to hold the Essence of Life so strong, so profound, that it had once been granted by the Titans themselves.
As the Spirit of Life exists in every living being, it is speculated that it's shadow, the Spirit of Death, might exist in every living being too and might give the living a connection to the realm of spirits within the Ethereal Plane and Shadowfell.
At its most basic, focused key enabled a practitioner to achieve great acts of endurance. It was said that they could ignore the touch of hot coals or the biteof chill wind, live without food and drink for three times longer than normal, live in a harsh desert, and survive any catastrophe. Some martial artists could channel inner power to make their bodies as light as a feather and so leap to great heights and distances, and even change direction midair. Others could channel inner energy into their hands and fingers, so that even a gentle push could have a great impact, even without touching at all. Similarly, monks could empower their unarmed strikes with ki, to strike with the force of magical, lawful, or even adamantine weapons, or use ki to achieve amazing speed and strength
In more advanced applications of ki, a monk could resist the impact or harm of magic or other form of attack, or heal an injury. Some could hold their breath for long periods of time, walk on water, and even pass through walls by slipping into the Ethereal Plane. Some could focus their ki to improve reactions and even summon considerable magical energy with which to cast a spell.
However, ki was a finite resource within mortals: a practitioner might have limited uses of a power a day or not be able to use their greatest ki powers if they had already used their lesser ki powers that day. The greatest ki powers exhausted one's inner strength. A starving spirit, could drain the key attribute of its victims, which blocked the use of their ki until they recovered. Some special strikes could disrupts the flow of ki in a foe.
Otherwise referred to as Decay, sometimes is known as the "Sixth Element", and is known as a primordial force. It can be seen as the opposite of Spirit, the fifth element.
Unlike Spirit, which is used to communicate with the elements and/or heal, Decay binds the element's to one's will, forcing them into servitude and weaponising them. This is also the reason why Dark Druids are able to use the elements (in a twisted form nonetheless) even without asking the elements for permission.
The primeval Shadowfell of Aeth was described as a nightmarish realm of decay. Bwom'Sambdi was said to be the manifestation of Decay in nature, a vital part of maintaining life.
