Deep Waters Ravener

Overview

As beautiful as they are horrifying, deep waters ravener are vicious and aggressive, and they'll attack any creature that crosses their paths. No one knows exactly what causes their affliction, but they appear to be former land dragons who somehow fell to deep waters corruption.

Abilities

The anemones that line the deep water raveners' bodies contain nematocysts, which provide any who touch them with a severe sting. In addition to simply affecting enemies who come too close, these creatures can also use their anemones as a form of whip, lashing out at all who come into range.   The stings from these anemones are dangerous in more ways than one. In addition to being painful, the stings can cause ulcers on the skin and, if severe enough, can lead to organ failure.   Due to their bodies being dead, the water they breathe out is effected by the same rot which plagues them, and it harms any creatures unfortunate enough to be caught in its path. As disgusting as it sounds, this breath weapon involves them spewing out septic water filled with rotten bile.

Appearance

Deep waters raveners have a very distinct look from other creatures of the sea. Their bodies are similar to dragons found on land, with them having four limbs, horns, and either wings or webbed arms. However, their scales are notably cracked and pulled apart, with large chunks of coral or crystal growing through their skin. Where sea dragons normally have fins, deep waters raveners have what appear to be sea anemones growing. The anemones and deep waters raveners seem to have a sort of mutualistic relationship; with the anemone living on and feeding off of the ravener, and the ravener using the anemones as makeshift fins and tentacle-like whips. Because of the nature of their appearance, with coral, crystal, and anemones growing on their bodies at random, each deep waters ravener is unique.   Deep waters raveners also tend to have bioluminescence in some form. Its presence can vary between individuals, much like the pattern and growth of their coral or anemone fins. Some have glowing eyes and anemone fins with glowing tips, others have light which radiates from the coral bursting through their skin. However it presents itself, the glow is always blue in color. This common bioluminescence, and the fact that the coral and anemones inhabiting these dragons always seems to be the same species, suggests to researchers that these creatures all originate from the same place in the deep waters. However, the dragon bodies can vary, suggesting that any species of dragon can fall to this corruption.

Habitat and Society

Deep waters raveners are mindless, aggressive monsters, and therefore do not participate in regular sea dragon society. Other sea dragons fear them, as no one knows exactly what causes these creatures to fall to corruption. Out of fear that their condition can spread, sea dragons tend to avoid them at all costs, and generally will flee rather than fight if they encounter one. They are most hated by the shallow reef sea dragons, who see them as abominations, and they will often encourage adventurers they come across to put the creatures out of their misery.
