The Pit

Dusted with snow and rimmed with ice, the Pit is a slippery, treacherous descent. The bottom yawns with a number of tears, the exposed stone and earth caked with ice leading deep into the world. A dried-up river leads towards the Pit, coming from Spine, The and passing through Aesruk, similarly lined with thin and fragile ice. The Pit has long been a source of curiosity, but those who explored it long ago reported nothing of note: it leads into a cavernous expanse, filled with cold black water and drowned buildings.

Geography

Surrounded by the snow and trees of Faewoods, The, the Pit is easy to notice when travelling. Despite the ice and snow that settles on it, the stone and soil easily show through; snow that settles eventually slides down and into the cracks of the Pit, polishing the ice as it goes. Around the side of the Pit, sections of fences or warning signs have been established, though gaps are present throughout the line. In certain locations it has collapsed away, creating dangerous slopes that lead into the Pit with a wrong step.

History

Once, there was a lake here. An Eladrin city named Isthryl would come and go with the seasons, at times appearing within the Faewood and at others vanishing. Though its location was variable, the lake came to be named after the city as a result. The lake and an area of forest around the city became a partial vassal state, ceded to the Eladrin city for the city to gather resources when present.   The Cataclysm banished the city to the Feywild, opening the tears in the bottom of the lake. The water drained away over several weeks as the spring in the mountains dried up, the water clinging to the sides of the Pit freezing over in the cold air. Since then, the Pit has remained an empty deathtrap for those who attempt to cross or explore it, a dangerous area splitting much of the forest in half.
