The Faewoods

Serene peace runs through the Faewild, lulling those who travel it into a sense of calm relaxation. The charm hangs heavy in the air, as drifting motes of snow and dust glisten in the light. The trees around are strong and full of life, with some almost seeming to change their shape or colour independent of the seasons. In particular, for those who spend too long amongst the trees, travellers can often become enamoured with the area and find their selves drawn into a trance, unable to do little else than stand and bask in the peace of the forest. Such individuals find that the peace ends come dusk when the charm of the forest becomes sinister and the inhabitants step forth once again.

Geography

The Faewoods covers half of the entire northern region of central Aesmaril, spanning from the coast to Aesruk at its widest point. The land it grows from is dense with snow and ice, split through the middle by the gaping hole of The Pit. In particular, one region of the forest to the west of the Pit has a flattened appearance and stronger charm effect; the area where the city of Isthyl used to appear.

Fauna & Flora

The forest is filled with various trees and shrubs; not only of the mundane kind but unusual species derived from magical saturation occur at random. Trees with mobile roots and branches, leaves of metallic hues and shrubs which seem to defy the natural laws by subsisting on nothing but snow or stone. Some rare reports have even brought word of trees adorning the air, floating upon splayed clusters of roots and drifting into the depths of the Faewild. Animals are similarly affected, and even though the city has long since vanished Feywild species have remained present since. Tracts carved into the snow and stone hint at burrowing species of large size and power, while clawed and ravaged trees reveal large, viciously clawed animals marking territory out, at least twice at tall as the average human.

Natural Resources

Lumber is a plentiful resource within the forest, available in the densely grown trees. Stone can be gathered from exposed projections, with a wide variety of fruits and berries available to those who know what to search for. From the beasts within, furs and meat can be obtained. Little else can be obtained, however, and for those who enter without care, dangers can vastly outweigh the potential gains.

History

The Faewoods have always been a large and sprawling range of trees, revered and held in high esteem by those who lived nearby. It was often used for lumber, plant, and animal resources like berries and fur, with a number of villages established along its border for ease of access.   When the Eladrin arrived, the reputation of the forest only increased; and to maintain peace, a region to the east of the then-present lake was granted to the city, allowing them to gather resources and live as they needed to without conflict. The Cataclysm banished the city from the world, sending it back to the Feywild, but the magic which had seeped into the Faewild remained among the trees and the shrubs.
