About Xerum 525

The private jet touches down on a small, unmarked airfield just outside Salzburg under a moonless sky. Two black SUVs are waiting on the tarmac, engines running.

A tall, impeccably dressed man steps out of the lead vehicle. Even from a distance, he commands attention. Blonde hair swept back, sharp features, and an expensive black coat that moves like liquid. As he approaches, you notice his eyes — a faint, unnatural violet hue that catches the headlights for just a moment.

He stops a few feet away and offers a polite, disarming smile.

“You must be the ones they call Aether,” he says, voice smooth and cultured, with only the faintest trace of an accent. “I’ve been looking forward to meeting you.”

He extends a gloved hand.

“My name is Adolf. Most people who work for me call me Adolf Jr. It’s… less confusing that way.”

He gives a small, self-deprecating chuckle, as if acknowledging how ridiculous the name sounds.

“I represent a private organization known as Section 8. We deal in… historical anomalies. Things the rest of the world would rather pretend don’t exist. Ancient technologies. Occult remnants. People like the Twelve.”

He gestures toward the waiting SUVs.

“I won’t waste your time with pleasantries. We have reason to believe there is a viable sample of Xerum 525 still sealed in an old salt mine beneath this mountain. It is one of the last known caches left in the world. I need you to retrieve it.”

He looks directly at you, violet eyes gleaming.

“This substance is extremely dangerous. It has a… tendency to bond with living tissue. Especially with those who have certain… predispositions.”

He gives your hand (or the spot where your scar will soon be) a meaningful glance.

“Bring the sample to me intact, and Section 8 will make it worth your while. Fail, and the substance will likely kill you… or turn you into something far worse.”

He tilts his head slightly, studying you with genuine curiosity.

“Any questions before you go underground?”

He waits patiently, the cold night wind tugging at his coat.

When you’re ready, he nods toward the SUVs.

“Good. Then let’s begin.”

Here's a strong list of 6 questions players are likely to ask Adolf Jr. during the briefing, along with his in-character responses. These are written to fit his smooth, charming, but slightly unsettling personality:

1. Who are you really? / Why do they call you Adolf Jr.?

Adolf Jr.: (small, self-deprecating smile) “Because it’s accurate. My mother’s name was Maria Oršić. I was the first successful… bridge. The original pact’s child. Most people find the name uncomfortable. I find it honest.”

2. What is Section 8?

Adolf Jr.: “A private organization that cleans up history’s mistakes. When governments, corporations, or cults dig up things they shouldn’t — things like the Twelve, or Xerum 525 — we make sure the world doesn’t burn because of it. Sometimes we contain. Sometimes we acquire. And sometimes… we hire people like you.”

3. What exactly is Xerum 525?

Adolf Jr.: “A synthetic bridge substance. It allows human biology to interface with higher-dimensional energy. The girls used it as fuel for their power. In its pure form, it can grant extraordinary abilities… or tear a person apart from the inside. We want it before anyone else weaponizes it again.”

4. Why do you need us? Why not send your own people?

Adolf Jr.: (leans forward, violet eyes gleaming) “Because the girls don’t trust me. I’m… family. You’re new. Clean. You don’t carry the stink of 1939. Plus, you’ve already proven you can survive things most people can’t. That makes you valuable.”

5. What happens if we fail?

Adolf Jr.: (smile fades) “Then either the Sisterhood destroys the sample… or someone far worse finds it. And trust me — you do not want the kind of people who are still looking for pure Xerum 525 to get their hands on it.”

6. What’s with the scar / What’s happening to me?

Adolf Jr.: (looks at your hand with genuine interest) “That scar means the substance has already chosen you as a new antenna. You’re becoming what Maria once was. Whether that’s a gift or a curse… depends entirely on what you do with it.”

The rival group is a three-person kill-team from the Sisterhood of Eternal Mercy — elite warrior nuns who have been tracking this particular cache for months. Their goal is to destroy the Xerum 525 before anyone else can claim it.

Sisterhood of Eternal Mercy

  • Sister Valeria – Cold, experienced leader, expert with silver blades
  • Sister Katarina – Heavy, brutal, carries a massive UV hammer
  • Sister Lena – Scout and marksman, uses UV-tipped crossbow bolts

The Salt Mine Entry – Salzburg, Austria

The entrance to the old salt mine is hidden at the end of a narrow, overgrown logging road deep in the Austrian Alps. Most people drive right past it without noticing.

A rusted chain-link fence, half-collapsed and covered in ivy, blocks the path. A faded, bullet-pocked sign still reads in German:

„Salzbergwerk Salzburg – Betreten Verboten“ (Salt Mine Salzburg – Entry Forbidden)

Beyond the fence lies a dark, rectangular opening cut straight into the mountainside — a wide tunnel mouth framed by weathered timber supports. The entrance is partially blocked by fallen rocks and decades of debris, but a narrow, man-sized gap has been cleared recently.

Cold, damp air rolls out of the tunnel like breath from a grave. It carries the sharp, mineral scent of salt mixed with something older — rust, mildew, and a faint metallic tang.

A single, flickering yellow bulb hangs above the entrance, swaying gently even though there’s no wind. Below it, someone has spray-painted a crude symbol in black: a small Black Sun with a single crack running through it.

Fresh tire tracks and boot prints lead into the darkness. Some of the prints are smaller and lighter — likely the Sisterhood of Eternal Mercy, who arrived before you.

The tunnel slopes downward immediately, disappearing into absolute blackness after twenty meters. You can hear distant dripping water echoing from deep inside, and occasionally… something else. A low, rhythmic humming that feels almost like a voice.

This is the mouth of the mine.

Once you step past the threshold, the outside world feels very far away.

Room-by-Room Summary:

  1. Mine Entrance – Overgrown, chained-off tunnel mouth with faded Nazi-era signs.
  2. Collapsed Tunnel – Unstable rubble crawl (first obstacle).
  3. Whispering Gallery – Massive echoing salt cavern where voices from 1944 can be heard.
  4. Black Sun Chamber – Large room with a huge Black Sun symbol burned into the wall.
  5. Flooded Shaft – 30-meter vertical drop with slippery ladders and brine pockets.
  6. Crystal Chapel – Beautiful but deadly crystal-filled chamber that resonates with sound.
  7. Narrow Gallery – Tight corridor where the Sisterhood sets up an ambush.
  8. Guardian Vault – Final iron door leading to the altar.
  9. Obsidian Altar Chamber – Small circular room containing the lead-lined box with Xerum 525.

Encounter 1: The Collapsed Tunnel

You’re squeezing through the rubble of the collapsed entrance tunnel when you hear voices ahead — German spoken with a sharp, religious tone.

Challenge: The Sisterhood team is already inside. They triggered a small collapse behind them to slow pursuers. You must either:

  • Crawl through a narrow, unstable gap (2d12 + Agility vs DC 16)
  • Or clear rubble quietly (2d12 + Strength vs DC 18)

First Contact: You overhear Sister Valeria say: “The vial must burn. No one touches the devil’s blood.” They don’t notice you yet, but they’re now aware someone else is in the mine.

Encounter 2: The Whispering Gallery

The massive echoing cavern. The Sisterhood team is twenty meters ahead of you, moving carefully.

Challenge: The whispers affect both groups. Players and the Sisters must each make a 2d12 + Willpower roll vs DC 17.

Complication: If the players fail, they hear their names whispered. If the Sisters fail, Sister Lena becomes momentarily possessed and shoots a crossbow bolt at the nearest player (2d12 + 5 attack). This reveals both groups to each other.

Dialogue: Sister Valeria (coldly): “Heretics. You will not leave this mine with that abomination.”

Encounter 3: The Black Sun Carving

You reach the chamber with the huge Black Sun burned into the salt wall.

Combat Encounter: The Sisters arrive at the same time. The moment someone shines a light on the carving, it awakens four Lesser Shadow Wisps.

Tactical Choice:

  • Fight the shadows together with the Sisters (temporary truce)
  • Let the Sisters fight the shadows while you sneak past
  • Attack the Sisters while they’re distracted by the shadows

Sister Katarina roars: “These abominations will be purged by holy fire!”

Encounter 4: The Flooded Descent

The vertical shaft is flooded. The Sisters are already climbing down the rusty ladder ahead of you.

Challenge:

  • Climb down while avoiding brine pockets (2d12 + Agility vs DC 19)
  • The Sisters cut the ladder halfway down, forcing you to either repair it or free-climb the last 15 meters.

Ambush: Sister Lena waits at the bottom with her UV crossbow, sniping at anyone descending.

Encounter 5: The Sisterhood Ambush – “The Narrow Gallery”

You emerge from the flooded shaft into a long, narrow natural gallery with salt walls that sparkle like diamonds under your flashlight.

Challenge: The Sisterhood team (Sister Valeria, Katarina, and Lena) has set up an ambush here. They’ve stretched thin silver wire across the passage at ankle and neck height.

Mechanics (Aether 2d12):

  • Perception Check: 2d12 + Perception vs DC 18 to notice the wires.
  • Agility Check: 2d12 + Agility vs DC 17 to duck/dodge through them safely.

Combat Trigger: If you trigger the wires, Sister Katarina charges with her UV hammer while Sister Lena provides covering fire with UV-tipped bolts from a ledge above. Sister Valeria stays back and chants a suppression rite, weakening your gold scar’s effectiveness for 2 rounds.

Dialogue: Sister Valeria: “The devil’s blood will not claim another soul today. Turn back, heretic.”

Encounter 6: The Crystal Chapel

You enter a breathtaking natural chamber where the salt has formed massive translucent crystals that look like frozen organ pipes.

Challenge (Puzzle + Hazard): The crystals resonate when sound is made. The Sisterhood has already passed through and left a trap — a small device playing a looped recording of a backward chant. The resonance is causing the crystals to slowly crack and fall like glass daggers.

Mechanics:

  • You must cross the chamber in near-total silence while dodging falling crystal shards (2d12 + Agility vs DC 19 each round).
  • Using your gold scar to create a dampening field (2d12 + Willpower vs DC 17) creates a safe bubble for one round.

Discovery: In the center of the chamber lies a discarded Ahnenerbe journal. The last entry reads: "Batch 525 successful. The girl with black hair (Frieda) consumed three candles in one breath. We must contain them all."

Encounter 7: The Guardian Vault

You reach a sealed iron door with an old Nazi eagle emblem. Behind it is a small antechamber leading to the Obsidian Altar.

Challenge (Combat + Rival Showdown): Sister Valeria and her remaining team are already trying to breach the door. They turn to fight you the moment you arrive.

Mechanics:

  • 3-on-1 (or 3-on-party) fight in a confined space.
  • Sister Katarina uses her UV hammer to smash at you.
  • Sister Lena snipes with UV bolts.
  • Sister Valeria casts a rite that creates a “Holy Light” zone, suppressing shadow powers.

Climax Line (if they’re losing): Sister Valeria (desperate): “If you take the devil’s blood, you will become worse than the witches we hunt!”

After defeating or bypassing them, the iron door creaks open, revealing the final chamber with the lead-lined box containing the Xerum 525 vial.

Encounter 8: The Obsidian Altar (Climax)

You finally reach the small circular chamber. The lead-lined box sits on the altar… but Sister Valeria is already standing in front of it, silver dagger drawn.

Final Showdown:

  • Sister Valeria is ready to destroy the vial.
  • The moment you open the box, the Xerum 525 reacts violently — the vial cracks and the liquid tries to bond with the closest person (you).

Key Moment: As the burning golden scar sears into your palm, Sister Valeria snarls:

Sister Valeria: “You fool… you’ve just become the new vessel!”

Immediately after, two Void Stalkers erupt from the shadows, drawn by the fresh Xerum.

You now have to fight the shadow entities while the Sisterhood team tries to kill both you and the shadows.
