Paria, Kingdom of, Ruins of

Paria and new Paria. - A kingdom in the north central region. No deserted. Kingdom of Ghosts. Royal family was decimated by a magical illness. The military fractured and fought amongst itself. Temple of Yondalla organized a retreat. Many scattered, but a few thousand settled in the River Kingdoms and formed New Paria, now a democracy. Human and halflings. Sponsored and supported by Tranquility.   The Kingdom of Paria was a semi-successful River Kingdoms monarchy. Ruled for three generations of the Ansellus "royal family". Emerick Ansellus lead a group of mercenaries, adventurers, and settlers into what is known as the Green River region. Known for its fertile valleys and timberland, there have been numerous previous settlements there. The new settlers found a number of ruins, crumbling foundations, and even a half built stone keep that served as their initial base of operations. Green River had been a difficult area to colonize due to its vicinity to several fey species, nearby goblin tribes, and several large predatory monsters. Emerick personally slew several beasts and cowered the goblins. He proclaimed himself King of the Kingdom of Paria (named after his grandmother) of Green River. The most important thing he did, was marry is longtime companion, Eddithal, who became queen. A half-elven druidess, she managed the Kingdom's relations with the nearby Fey. The Ansellus family successfully managed their Kingdom for the next century despite very limited resources. When Ansellus passed on, his wife declined the throne, handing it on to their daughter, Sala, who became Queen. Eddithal Asellus remained on, as the "Queen Mother". However, without her husband's presence she drifted away from the world of man, and began to reside in the fey woodlands and glades to the north of Paria. Queen Sala was a successful ruler, but lacked her father's power. The Kingdom experienced a slight decline and relied several times on adventurers to solve problems the local soldiers could not. Several decades after taking the throne, Queen Sala became ill. No mundane or magical interventions seemed able to cure her. The locals whispered that she had been cursed. These rumors became more intense, when after she passed, the new king, her son Alfrid, also became sick. The young King Alfrid held the throne for less than five years before he and the remained Ansellus family members all died from this wasting sickness. While he was ill, people started to migrate south, out of Paria. After he died, this became a flood. While some held on for years after the end of the Ansellus line, most fled. The largest group ended up settling together, in the South, and forming New Paria.   Today the Green River region is largely uninhabited. There are a few isolated groups of human settlers who survive through hunting and trapping. Otherwise the area has returned to the wild. It is widely "known" that the Green River region is "cursed" and few will enter it.
