Lyrie's Research
Little is known of Karzoug's early life, it isn't until late into his 20's that anything is on record. Beyond speculation and rumours of possible lich enslavement, the origins of whom would become one of the most powerful men of Thassilon is steeped in mystery; either by chance, or design. His first rise to power is beguilled by other-worldly magical events and eldritch 'mishaps', one of which resulting in the dissapearance of the previous runelord, Haphrama.
During Karzoug's reign, Shalast grew in power and Xin-Shalast became one of the most breathtaking cities in Golarion, though this grandeur only benefited Karzoug himself and the nobles. He ruled with corruption and ruthlessness: he once ordered an entire city to be burnt because the local tax collectors were short a few silvers. He and Alaznist, ruler of Bakrakhan, were in a state of perpetual warfare, constantly battling at the border between their two realms.
In -5620 AR, Karzoug built the Cyphergate and murdered its engineer Draveenzi, forever obscuring it's true purpose in time.
Codex Research
Karzoug, Runelord of Greed, was a wizard known for his calculating mind and utter mercilessness. Rumored to be either half-vampire or descended from draconic stock, absolute greed powered his every action. Certainly Karzoug was covetous and deeply corrupt—famed for ordering the immolation of an entire city for its tax collectors’ shorting of a few silvers—but that was the reward granted him by the runes for his power and dedication to magic. He long fought the silent war of assassins, mage-poison, and demon-fetches against Alaznist, the queen of Bakrakhan. In the end, something sank her kingdom below the waves, even as the Thassilonian empire fell. Karzoug was enough of a master of the arcane that many suspect his hand in triggering the murder of an entire kingdom. His weapon of rule was a burning glaive, studded with priceless meteoric gemstones.
