Dwarven Religion

Alveïn

All Dwarves believe in Alveïn, the source. They believe that Alveïn is the one that permits things from happening, both good and evil, large and small. Alveïn is generally depicted as a spiritual portal, from which everything stems. Alveïn is supposedly the ruler of all divines, celestials, infernals, and everything in between. It is common for Alveïn to be depicted at the extremities of dwarven maps or as the background from which the map comes forth. The Dwarves believe that if things aren't going the way Alveïn wants, then Alveïn will permit the existence of something that will change the world to what it wants.
Alveïn as a fundamental force
Most Dwarves consider Alveïn to be a fundamental force of the universe that is beyond comprehension. It is a reason for things to exist rather than a thing itself. Alveïn doesn't necessarilly rule over deities, they might not even believe in Alveïn. However, Alveïn does influence the deities, their actions and their very existence.
Alveïn as an entity
There are Dwarves who believe that Alveïn is an entity that inhabits the universe rather than being a concept that is beyond the universe. They believe that the spiritual portal is more a tool of Alveïn rather than Alveïn itself. They also believe Alveïn is not definitely beyond all other divines. To them Alveïn is more of the current divine ruler, one that can be influenced or even overthrown. However, Alveïn is also sort of the orchestrator of fate, and in many ways its own fate. So if Alveïn is somehow overthrown he would still be the almighty and alldetermining orchestrator of fate.

Worship

Dwarves generally do not attempt to oppose Alveïn, they consider it futile. They instead aim to understand the wishes of Alveïn. At the same time the Dwarves are humble in the face of Alveïn. They believe Alveïn is so far beyond their understanding that the practice of their religion is more aimed at other divinities. They try to understand more about Alveïn through those other divinities.

The Dwarves worship the following deities:
  • Mogul, the god of industry. His symbol is a ladle that is pouring metal, older symbols were the anvil and the hammer. He is worshipped on fixed days, which can vary for each dwarven hold.
  • Oluk, the goddess of justice and chance. Her symbol is either a scale, seesaw, or a pair of dice. During trials and religious rituals, followers of Oluk greet each other with a nudge or shoulder bump as a sign of recognition or good luck.
  • Thanik, god of life and death. His symbol is an underground orchid. For every dwarf an orchid is plucked at their birth and dried, when they die they are buried with the orchid.
  • Dahouk, god of knowledge. His symbol is a book and key. He is only worshipped and counselled by priests and monks, usually by the order of dwarves from high standings.
  • Handak, goddess of nature, light, and the sea, basically everything above ground. Her symbol depends on the specific dwarven hold. Dwarves who need to travel long distances above ground usually order the creation of small shrines along their frequented roads.
  • Bolz and Bilz, god and goddess conjoined twins of war. They are depicted by a dwarf with two heads and an intertwined beard. Bolz is the shield, Bilz is the hammer. They are worshipped in ritualistic, ceremonial combat, by real combat if required, or through tavern brawls.
