The result of gaining experience points is to progress up levels within your character class. This gives the character additional hit points, skills, spells, improved abilities, etc. And this, along with participating in the evolving story, is a key goal in playing a campaign character.
To gain experience, the character must take actions, handle challenges, use skills, learn new things, cast spells and engage in combat or conversation, etc. The DM will take note of all these elements and the character who performs them during game play, and the results will be applied to the appropriate character experience points sheet.
Experience points will only start to accumulate from the moment when the characters start to interact in the game play. Anything identified in the player introduction will not be included.

I am aware that I have not allocated XP for locations discovered so far. I am not planning on retro applying this idea, but will apply going forward.
Okay, so agreed to retro apply - but only to locations discovered during the actual game play or started from for Matrox and Zalman.
Understood and appreciated.
