Shl'ier Character in Aeris: Millennium Dawn | World Anvil

Shl'ier

The Ashen Lord

Dark and mysterious as the shadows he inhabits, Shl'ier is one of the most enigmatic entities to hold Godhood. His influence seeps into the mind like drops of water in the dark till you are consumed by the inky blackness of the void. Shl'ier holds his domain over Eclipses, Shadow, Guilt, forgotten and left behind ruins. In the ancient halls of the long dead Aerean Empire he holds strong, and in the mind of the robber fleeing in the dead of night his fingers seems to reach out. Among the Low Gods he is regarded as extremely powerful, and though isn't as vocal as the others, his influence is everywhere...   Born from the nightmares of Odeus, Shl'ier was the firstborn Low God, and wordlessly led them to attack the High Gods, beginning the Clash of the Gods. And it was the final strike of Shl'ier v.s. Odeus which shook all space and began time itself, sending the High and Low Gods away to inhabit their planes of existence. Since then Shl'ier has spread his influence throughout Aeris. He dwells in shadow, and feeds of guilt and the long forgotten.

Worship

Worship of Shl'ier varies follower to follower. His followers sometimes venture into ancient tombs or shadowy ruins only to be consumed by the long forgotten depths. But he also uses the power of guilt to strengthen his followers. Not all are lambs the shadowy slaughter, guilt drives the mind to dark places, and through this Shl'ier exerts his will. But these death cults are prevalent in worship of Shl'ier. Followers believe they will reach bliss in death, allowing themselves to be consumed by Shl'ier's shadow. And doing so in large groups within the darkness of ancient ruins strong with Shl'ier's is seen as a glorious fufillment of holy duty.

Appearance & Depictions

Shl'ier is usually seen as a massive shadow, or mass of inky darkness with ashen skeletal hands. His avatar takes a masculine form made from pure shadow. His face has no mouth, eyes, or ears. Even without eyes, when Shl'ier turns his attention towards you, you feel it to your core. The avatar seems almost liquid in quality, and Shl'ier slinks like the shadows which are his domain. Shl'ier wields the Blade of Shadows, a massive sword that seems almost an extension of Shl'ier himself. His body is almost outlined in a blue or dark purple.

Symbology

The symbol of Shl'ier is a black circle with a purple strike cut through it vertically, with three smaller ones slicing through that one. This symbol is meant to represent Shl'ier and his shadows as well as his blade. He's not often represented by anything else, as shadows and darkness can be used by his followers anywhere to praise him.

Holy Texts

The Ash Tomes are the books written by each individual follower that accounts their own personal interactions with the God as there is no one single book that Shl'ier can be attributed to like other Gods.

Holidays

Solar eclipses or Umbra Diebus are holidays for the faithful of Shl'ier. These days are called the "Shadow Days" and are marked with celebrations and sacrifices, usually of loved ones or fellow followers in order to empower the rest of the worshippers involved through their collective guilt in such heinous activities.

"In darkness there is true enlightenment. To plunge the world into darkness would be to give it meaning. The ruins of Aeris hold secrets of power left waiting and untouched within the gloom of their neglect. Use these places, and drink from them the long forgotten secrets hidden within. Surrender yourself to me in your desperation, your guilt. Let my shadows embrace you as no one else could" -Shl'ier
