Deneir

Deneir is the god of adventure and curiosity. He favors those who seek to explore the world and catalogue its many marvels. He is often the favored god of travelers, explorers, and adventurers.

Worshippers of Deneir come in all sorts and sizes. Some of his clerics and priests are mathematicians, seeking to derive mathematical equations to describe the universe. Some are historians or other scholars, devoting their life to knowledge. Others of his followers show him honor not in a temple or a university, but by exploring the unknown wilderness. The act of discovery is their act of worship.

In addition to his followers, the name of Deneir springs quickly to the lips of many in their encounters with chance, hoping to avoid a dire fate.

Holy Books & Codes

Like Mystra, Deneir has few holy books from himself, instead, he prefers his followers to fill his libraries and churches with books of knowledge to be shared with everyone.

Tenets of Faith

Deneir gives principles of philosophy to remind his followers to remain curious.

If you never venture out, how can you know life is true?
They say 'curiosity killed the cat', I say, 'at least the cat was brave enough to try'.
Knowledge is not just for the mage, even a poor man can benefit from reading.
Books are the lifeblood of knowledge, read them to learn, to feel, to create, and to live a thousand lives.
To be a scholar is to live the richest life, but only if he leaves the library to use his knowledge.
When one leaves to explore the world, guess what? They find it.
Take chances and you may find luck favors the bold.
Maps don't just show you the way, they give you new places to go.

The Great Exchange
Books and maps are the greatest treasures to followers of Deneir, and every two years there is a large exchange between nations of these precious tomes. Clergy and followers bring the best books and maps as gifts to the libraries of Deneir and exchange them for new ones. It is customary for the High Priest to choose one of these new books and read them aloud to the general public.

Tournament of the Lucky
There are few better examples of luck than gambling and once a year those most skilled in games of chance come to prove themselves to Deneir. Anyone with a game of chance may bring it to town and challenge others to play. Many prizes and gold can be won, but the best winners are called the 'Chosen of Deneir.' Though the festival is filled with jovial and friendly gameplay, cheating does happen and it is strictly forbidden. Aside from the belief that if you cheat and get away with it, Deneir will curse you, if you are caught your winnings are stripped, you are placed in the stocks (where food is thrown by the townsfolk), and you may not participate in the Tournament for four years.

Divine Goals & Aspirations

Deneir loves exploration and knowledge and wishes to cultivate that love in others. Research is only worthwhile if it's for something you love or have need of. Deneir cultivates a welcoming environment for those who wish to expand their knowledge. This is why he favors humans as they seem to be born with an unending thirst for the unknown.

Although Deneir is not violent, he does delight in thwarting the Opposition goddess Leira, who hoards knowledge from all. Deneir relishes sneak thieves who retrieve tomes from Leira's library and laughs at followers whose hoarded knowledge is revealed to the world.
