Celetide

Like the other few Aarakocran cities, Celetide is unique in its design. Beside Zephys, its emplacement is also on the surreal side of things. Its name directly inspired by the duality of its creators. A union of sea and sky, Celetide is home to Aquatic Aarakocras.   While it's harbour is always alive with trading ships, few of the permanent residents are anything but Aquatic Aarakocras. The water dwelling subrace being as versatile as it is, however, also means the crowds are never boring to look at despite the relative scarceness of other races. By its watery nature, Celetide otherwise attracts retired sailors who still yearn to see the waves everyday, be at sea, even if they physically cannot endure life on a boat anymore, or can't find work on one. The rest of the ever changing population is composed of pilgrims.   A giant island-city, far away from any coasts, Celetide towers above the waves that break upon its risen arches. It rises in a very similar fashion to the rock pillars rising out of the water closer to the coast, in a rather steep rise, but with the refinement of a built medium. Most of all, the city if defined by two main activities, which in turn are defined by two areas. The harbour, and the temple.

The Harbour

Situated under white arches tall enough to accommodate even the tallest mast, the harbour is the beating heart of Celetide, its only source of resources that are not salt water and fish. Always bustling with activity, the sounds of the sea are nearly drowned out by the cracking of wood and the yells of deckhands unloading and loading back up their cargo for their haggling bosses.

The Temple

If the Harbour is Celetide's beating heart, the Temple is its pious mind. Besides trade and proximity to the sea, it is its temple that brings visitor to the Floating City. With many, many sections dedicated to various deities, the Temple is bigger even than most superstructures. The permanent residents' worship result in a mostly sea-based regular pantheon, but many more deities still have impressive followings flowing through the city.

Surviving Away from the Mainland

Between the trade in the Harbour where the exchange of fish and just general taxes allow to procure most of the needed ressources by trade, the offerings and gifts pilgrims bring with them to thank those tending to the Temple ensure many's daily meals. Over time, the Temple has also brought in various powerful religious groups, or groups of adventurers, to request divine intervention, with mixed results, as these interventions always depend on the requested deity to deign answer, and some have pretty high standards...

Author's Notes

The original version of this article was created as an entry for World Anvil's flagship Summer Camp 2019 event, specifically for prompt #7:
"Describe an isolated settlement and how it survives in your world."
You can view my other entries from the competition here.   This article and the world I am writing about have been created using D&D 5e as a base. This is a homebrew setting, inspired by Wizard of the Coast's wonderful lore and creations, with a particular focus on developing flying races and the planes.
