Colwyn Thorpe

Sorcerer Lord Colwyn Thorpe

“The Golem-Breaker, Master of Motion, Key-Chaser”

Aspect Focus: Animation Magic (Animancy), Arcane Engineering, Mysticval Keys

Background:

Born into indentured servitude, Colwyn’s life began as a magical debt. His mother, once a man, promised her firstborn child for the spell that made her dreams real. The Sorcerers’ Guild accepted this contract, but rather than doom Colwyn to menial labour, they discovered his innate magical spark. By age 9, Colwyn had animated his first broomstick battalion. By 12, he created an artificial brain capable of basic decisions. At 16, he was awarded the title Sorcerer Lord after unveiling the first Ultramaton.

The Ultramaton – “Mia”

A masterwork of arcano-mechanical brilliance, Mia is:

  • Constructed of a magical, silvery living metal called memory alloy.
  • Fully sentient, emotionally complex, and psychically bound to Colwyn.
  • Capable of shapeshifting, forming weapons from her limbs, and altering her appearance.

Though a protector, Mia fills multiple roles: surrogate mother, companion, travel partner, and—perhaps quietly—something more. Her ability to blend into crowds or become a whirling arsenal has saved Colwyn’s life many times.

Current Pursuits:

  • Colwyn seeks the legendary Keys of Lockemann, already possessing the True Key of Translocation.
  • His obsession is Lockemann’s Key to the Infinite Mansion—a mythical artifact said to open a boundless extra-dimensional estate.
  • He believes clues to the mansion’s location are hidden in the tower of a missing Sorcerer Lord who vanished during a magical housing experiment gone wrong.

Personality & Reputation:

  • Witty, charming, irreverent—a favourite among students, but a headache for traditionalists.
  • Known to play pranks on Wizards, once animating a senior wizard’s hat to loudly sing bar songs.
  • Tends to eschew robes, favouring tailored coats with brass buttons and animated accessories (his scarf bites pickpockets).

Ultramaton:

"Where gears end, the soul begins. Where steel bends, will endures."
— attributed to Sorcerer Lord Colwyn Thorpe

Overview

An Ultramaton is an extremely rare and controversial magical construct, first named to describe the being known as Mia, created by Sorcerer Lord Colwyn Thorpe in the city of Lirvos.

The term is a portmanteau of “Ultra” and “Automaton”, symbolizing a being that transcends the boundaries of both mechanical construction and magical animation.

Nature & Abilities

Unlike traditional constructs, Ultramatons are formed from arcane-bound liquid metal, allowing them to:

  • Shape-shift their limbs and surface features
  • Reconfigure their bodies for defense, utility, or deception
  • Flow through narrow spaces or mold themselves around obstacles
  • Create simple weapons or tools from their own mass
  • Shift between fluid and solid states as needed

Their composition is visually similar to quicksilver, but under control of their own will. This form is not purely mechanical, but bound through mystical animancy and will-forged essence.

Sentience

Ultramatons are more than just adaptive constructs. They are:

  • Fully self-aware
  • Capable of emotions, moral reasoning, and independent thought
  • In possession of fluid identities, both literally and metaphorically
  • Referred to by some as "living magic in a skin of metal"

Creation

The method of creating an Ultramaton is unknown and likely unrepeatable without Colwyn Thorpe’s direct involvement.

Suspected requirements include:

  • Living quickmetal — an arcane substance theorized to be semi-conscious
  • A matrix of rune-forged stability anchors
  • Infusion with animantic spark or divine-thread essence
  • Years of tuning, bonding, and soul-weaving

Controversy

Their existence raises serious ethical, religious, and metaphysical questions:

  • The Wizard’s Guild of Taured quietly monitors Mia’s presence with increasing unease.
  • Technomancers view Ultramatons as a dangerous but awe-inspiring step forward.
  • Some priests whisper that such beings are mockeries of divine creation—others see them as miracles misunderstood.

Known Example

  • Mia, the companion and aide to Colwyn Thorpe, is the only known Ultramaton.
She appears humanoid but has demonstrated liquid reconfiguration, facial mimicry, and the ability to flow like water through broken terrain. Despite her fluid nature, Mia maintains a strong personal identity and aesthetic grace that reflects both her creator’s tastes and her own developing will.
