The Science & Research Facility

The party enter the Science & Research Facilities in search of weapons that can weaken Ghallus through the use of Arvalis powered ‘shards’. These were referred to as Shard Cannons and have the potential to weaken if not completely kill a Keeper. Upon arriving at the facility, the party must search the complex in search of said weapons. Along the way, they learn a lot about Alda and its high tech culture before its destruction. They can visit different sections of the complex that reveal the areas of research they had been studying. They find an old lab used by the researchers in the pocket dimension and from there they use a computer to pinpoint the locations of the shard cannons. They determine that there are several of them left at the Temple of Korazel on Mt. Alda. The party leaves the facility and heads for Mt. Alda.

Purpose / Function

The Science & Research Facility, commonly referred to as SRF, was once the shining beacon of innovation and technology throughout the entire nation of Alda. It was here that Salamar had the Arvalis housed so that his researchers could observe it and experiment with its infinite power. Every technological advancement Alda had came from here. Over the course of less than 100 years, Alda went from medieval knowledge, to technology nearing interstellar space exploration. With the Arvalis proving to be a truly infinite power source without measure, anything was possible.

Architecture

The complex itself was a massive, sprawling are of the central district of Archaia. It was comprised of several different building all attached by high speed travel tunnels. Many of the buildings not only had many floors reaching to the sky, but also underground floors. Some rumors were passed around the city saying that the basements of the SRF were large enough to fit thousands of people, others said there was an entire city below ground there.

History

After the destruction of Alda, the central district of Archaia, including the Temple of Korazel and the SRF were completely untouched. Ghallus wanted to keep these places intact to preserve Alda’s history and culture. However, every person in the city was vaporized by the Arvalis. This left the city completely abandoned and without maintanence for hundreds of years. Today, the facility is in great ruin. Many of its upper floors have collapsed due to decay. And many of its underground floors have also collapsed and become dilapidated. Overgrowth has crept its way down to some of the lower floors and some areas are now completely inaccessible.
