Elemental

Elementals are beings of pure elemental energy, native to the Elemental Planes. Most elementals can speak a form of Primordial based on their elemental makeup (fire elementals speak Ignan, while water elementals speak Aquan), and a few more powerful elementals can speak other languages such as Common. Most elementals are barely capable of rational thought; elementals have no souls and most do not have a sense of identity; being little more than animated energy. They operate based on instinct as dictated by the elements that they are composed of (fire wants to burn, air wants to blow, etc.). Some elementals, generally ones which have "lived" a very long time and collected a lot of energy, have more of sense of being. This tends to be correlated with size; a larger elemental has absorbed more energy, and thus has been around longer.
Elementals are commonly summoned and bound by mages, often functioning like engines and power sources for various tasks, such as airships. It would not be correct to say that these elementals resent this practice, as that would require more emotional thought than they are capable off. An elemental is simply a dangerous force which, like any other form of energy, does not want to be contained.
