The Dreord Vix

High in the north, amidst icy mountains and frozen rivers, amidst blistering cold and fast, frigid winds, far from any form of civilization, lay the Dreord Vix. Its black stone structure provided a sharp contrast to its pure white surroundings. Here, in the bowels of the Dreord Vix, the mysteries of the world were unlocked. Here, the center of all magic in Aen, secrets were discovered and then hidden deeper than before. Here, in grand starkness, Kyra Alkrose brushed her hair.

Purpose / Function

The origin of the Dreord Vix is unknown, but thousands of years ago, the Council discovered it and re-purposed it into their home. It began small, most of the create castle was empty. However, the Council decided to start a school to teach their art, and it grew. Before long, graduates of the school decided to stay, and created Houses within the Dreord Vix. In less than two hundred years the Dreord Vix became the ultimate seat of magical power anywhere in Aen.

Alterations

The only changes in the structure of the Dreord Vix are the excavations underneath. What most think are catacombs lie under the building, and have been constantly excavated to make room for the House of Iron, the magical smithy.

Architecture

The Dreord Vix is primarily constructed of a glossy black stone. It is not obsidian, but extremely similar in appearance. The Council has done many tests on its substance over the years, and the general consensus is that it was built magically, but no one knows what it is made of, and no one has found anything else made of the same material. Most people call it 'blackstone'. The style is of an elegant palace, tall thin spires, and great domes. However, as it was built out of blackstone, it has a much more imposing presence than its architecture should imply. It does have a thick outer wall with crenelations and machicolations and a gatehouse, but its location gives it most of its defense. The interior building is all more elegant than functional in defense.

History

Built millennia ago, abandoned soon after. No one knows why, or who built it, although theories prevail. About two thousand years before the events of the story, the Council, a small circle of extremely powerful mages, discovered it and placed themselves there. They chose the Dreord Vix because of its remote location. Now its role in the world is crucial, as it is the primary exporter of both magical items and magical people, many of which enlist in various armies. Rulers of nations don't really like how much power the Dreord Vix and the Council has, but because of the power housed within, and its extreme location, it is all but impossible to do anything about it.
