Geology & Geography
It’s an alloy, created by mixing aetherite and nyxium. As for where those can be found:
Aetherite is found exclusively in the Eclipsal Rift, a shattered celestial body suspended in Aeldrithius’s upper atmosphere. This region is a maze of floating landmasses and crystalline debris, perpetually engulfed in void storms- chaotic bursts of arcane and gravitational energy. Aetherite forms as veins within these floating fragments, its crystalline structure absorbing and amplifying the surrounding magical flux. Mining aetherite is dangerous, requiring advanced levitation technology and protection against the Rift’s unstable energies.
Nyxium lies deep within the volcanic caverns of the Sky Forge, a sacred holy site where the most high quality tech is crafted. These caverns are located in Calathiel, where the planet’s molten core occasionally breaches the surface. The mineral can only be extracted in its raw form during firequakes, brief events where the molten tides expose the veins.
Life & Expiration
It’s highly stable, able to withstand deterioration for a good few centuries and store magical energy for an extra several centuries.
History & Usage
History
The Sky Forge, nestled at the peak of the Ashspire Summit, is said to be where nyxium first emerged from the planet’s molten veins. According to legend, this forge was established by the Celestial Artisans, an ancient order of Saintly smiths. It’s able to craft materials that blend physical, magical, and cosmic properties.
The creation of Mytharyll began with the discovery of Aetherite in the Eclipsal Rift in 2458. Explorers, driven by the technological advancements of the 25th-century, ventured into the Rift and unearthed this luminous crystalline metal. Initially, Aetherite was valued for its raw magical potency, but its chaotic energy made it impractical for sustained use in weaponry.
In 2472, Master Artificer Rhaedryn Vael, an Aeldrithian technomancer, hypothesised that combining aetherite with nyxium could stabilise its energy while preserving its magical properties. Seeking a forge capable of merging such volatile elements, Rhaedryn gained permission to work at the Sky Forge. Under the watchful eyes of the Celestial Artisans' descendants, she conducted the first successful fusion of the two materials. The resulting alloy, named Mytharyll, was hailed as a miracle of technomancy and metallurgy.
Everyday use
Outside of weapons, it’s very popular to use in construction, especially in terms of framework and beams.
Hazards
The first hazard arises from the handling of aetherite. This crystalline material is inherently unstable, pulsing with latent arcane energy that can overload the nervous system when improperly contained. During the forging process, the act of melting aetherite releases voidic vapours, a gaseous byproduct charged with the same chaotic energy. For those exposed, these vapors interact with the brain’s synaptic pathways, inducing vivid and often uncontrollable hallucinations.
Smiths and technomancers working with Aetherite report visions of alien landscapes, incomprehensible geometric patterns, and echoes of voices that seem to transcend time and space. While some view these experiences as moments of divine enlightenment, others are driven to madness, unable to distinguish reality from the phantoms conjured by their minds. The longer one is exposed to these vapours, the more vivid and terrifying the hallucinations become, with repeated exposure leading to a permanent alteration of perception.
Nyxium, while more stable than aetherite, brings its own set of perils. When heated to the extreme temperatures required for forging mytharyll, nyxium releases a subtle, almost imperceptible resonance that interacts with the body’s bioelectric field. This resonance has been found to stimulate the brain’s reward centers, creating a euphoria that can quickly become addictive.
Many blacksmiths and artificers describe an overwhelming sense of power and clarity while working with nyxium, as though they are tapping into the very lifeblood of the planet. However, this feeling is deceptive; the "high" from nyxium exposure fades rapidly, leaving the individual with an intense craving to return to the forge. Chronic exposure leads to physical dependence, with symptoms ranging from trembling hands and erratic behaviour to complete emotional collapse. This dependency is so severe that many who work with mytharyll forging for prolonged periods become irreversibly addicted, often succumbing to exhaustion or delusion.
Environmental Impact
Aside for the vapours that can affect nearby folk, there’s actually very little impact on the environment. Outside of the explosiveness of the aetherite, that is.
Reusability & Recycling
Thanks to mytharyll’s magical properties, it can be bent in and out of shape and still retain its integrity, making it popular to use in construction or making new weapons out of old ones.
