History

The original “His Earl’s Quiet Inn,” like the stories and legends surrounding it have been reconstructed many times – too many to recount here. [To hear the sometimes spectacular if not stale tunes, buy a pint and listen to the local bards sing of them daily, sundown to mid-watch.] It was built by Korvath the second Earl of Hempsworth as a place to spend his days of drunken debauchery away from his father’s watchful and puritanical eye. While the main floor was in fact a reflection of its name, the secret rooms on the second floor and those below ground especially, have bared witness to unspeakable acts which, for the sake of the reader’s soul and for want of precious ink in quantities sufficient to recount in full, I will not put down on this here parchment. It is thought that it was in the subterranean lairs of this inn that the first Earl of Hempsworth drew his last breath, killed in a struggle with his son upon discovering his heir engaged in shameful acts that, if discovered, would stain the family name for many generations. This truth has never been confirmed due to the manner, place, and circumstances of his death, and so the son’s version of history became the official version of events when he assumed the title of the Earl of Hempsworth. However, the people remembered and kept the truth alive – some of them less alive having been caught spreading the “unofficial” truth – a truth which was constantly affirmed by the continued actions of a spoilt, brutal and uncontrolled maniac’s rule. Attempts to smother this story only led to people near and far discussing the inn’s name in hushed and mumbled tones, which cemented itself in the common collective and in some distant foggy era replaced the name of the Earldom itself – now known as Harlequin. – Say the name of the in often in secretive tones friend, and you will hear it! An inn by such a name still thrives in Harlequin. It may or may not be on the site of the original inn. No one has found secret underground rooms or secret passages on the second floor – or at least nobody has confessed to finding them. It is as respectable a place as you might find this side of The King’s Road, a place where all are welcome (more or less). People as respected as the Companions laid heads upon pillows here, as well as some legends of ill repute.
