Pyter Kremin, 12th ID, February 1950

I remember one attack we made, I think it was in February of 50’’ when we were in the south colonies. We had been there awhile and it had been nothing but rain and mud and stalemate… Anyways, we were ordered to make a push towards a hill held by the Toks and of course the hill was too difficult for the tanks so we had to go up there alone. I had a bad feeling about it from the start but nearly the entire battalion was Going up so I wasn't worried about winning. After a long while, maybe maybe hour or two… we just made it about a quarter of the way up the hill when a shot rang out and a man, oh I don't know, maybe 15 yards from me slumped down into the mud and then all he'll broke loose. Gunfire exploded in all directions and several men were hit, killed, and a few screaming or calling for medics. It was all kinda blurry but I returned fire at one of the bunkers I spotted and as soon as I did, machine gun fire raked across the log I was using for cover and I got down for a good while. I heard artillery scream in and impact somewhere but I couldn't see it. One of the guys next to me took a hit and he squirmed in the mud for a minute before he died. I see him alot. A lot of our officers were dead but the ones that weren't began to rally the men and push forwards slowly with the sound of whistles blowing. I just held my breath, got up and ran up the hill straight at that bunker, firing as I went. When I got close I thought I could hear them talking in there but I tossed in a Grenade and then kept running as it detonated in the bunker. The air was still full of gunfire and the smell of cordite and other explosives burned my nose. Soon after this a few of our jets roared over and dropped Napalm on the hillside above us. I remember distinctly burning men rolling down the hill towards us, screaming and flailing or just limp. After some regrouping, we moved up the hill once again and once again machine gun fire raked our men and several dropped and we all dumped ourselves into the mud again… the same thing happened again and again until we reached the top of that hill… when we crested the ridge we could see all the Toks running down the hill and it was like an avenging for all our men. It was simply a turkey shoot, you couldn't miss… I killed two or three myself. The boys all got to the top and just opened up on em’ they said we got nearly 200 just on the back of that hill… anyways… we took it and then a few days later we did it again and again until the war ended.
