Kalvarianism

Kalvarianism, the state religion of the Holy Kingdom of Stanna (the only country where the religion is even a significant percentage), is an all-encompassing and highly structured faith. The religion is both a spiritual guide and a stringent moral code, with its doctrines influencing every aspect of daily life. Kalvarianism's followers are known for their extreme devotion and willingness to sacrifice everything for their beliefs, including their lives.

Core Beliefs

Monotheism and Zorath: Kalvarianism is a monotheistic religion centered on the worship of Zorath, the allegedly all-powerful and omniscient deity. Zorath is viewed as a stern but just god who demands unwavering obedience and absolute piety from his followers. Zorath is believed to govern all aspects of existence, from the grand movements of the stars to the smallest details of everyday life.
Prophet Kalvar: Kalvar, the central prophetic figure, is said to have received divine revelations from Zorath over a period of forty days and nights on the sacred Mount Ascendant. These revelations were compiled into the holy text known as The Book of Truths, which outlines the moral, ethical, and spiritual guidelines that all followers must adhere to.

Sacred Symbols and Totems

The Owl: In Kalvarianism, owls are considered sacred creatures, embodying wisdom, vigilance, and the divine presence of Zorath. Owls are believed to be messengers of this god, capable of bridging the mortal world with the divine. It is said that an owl's gaze can see into a person's soul, revealing their true nature. Killing or harming an owl is considered one of the gravest sins in Kalvarianism, and those who do so are subjected to severe penalties, often resulting in excommunication or execution.
The Book of Truths: The Book of Truths is the holy scripture of Kalvarianism. It contains the teachings, prophecies, and commandments of Zorath as revealed to Prophet Kalvar. The book is divided into three main sections:
1. The Commandments of Zorath: A set of strict laws governing personal behavior, social conduct, and religious practices.
2. The Visions of Kalvar: Descriptions of Prophet Kalvar's divine visions and interactions with Zorath, providing moral and spiritual guidance.
3. The Hymns of Praise: A collection of prayers, hymns, and liturgies used in daily worship and special religious ceremonies.

Rituals and Practices

Daily Worship: Followers of Kalvarianism are expected to engage in daily prayers at dawn, noon, and dusk, facing the direction of Mount Ascendant. Each prayer session includes recitations from both the The Book of Truths and The Tome of Prayer, chants of sacred hymns, and moments of silent reflection.
The Feast of Vigilance: One of the most important religious events is the Feast of Vigilance, held annually to honor Zorath and his messengers, the owls. The feast includes a week-long series of ceremonies, fasting, and communal prayers. A highlight of the festival is the Night of Watching, where followers stay awake all night, vigilantly watching for owls, and interpreting their movements as divine omens.
Pilgrimage to Mount Ascendant: A pilgrimage to Mount Ascendant is considered a sacred duty for all followers at least once in their lifetime. The journey is seen as a test of faith and endurance, symbolizing Prophet Kalvar's own journey to receive Zorath's revelations.
Grooming: Followers beleive that Zorath's true form posses pure black hair, and as he commands his people to act as he would, it has become commonplace for people lacking black hair to shave off all the hair on their body, not just their head. This includes both men and women and people who do not abide by this unwritten rule are treated with a level of contempt.

Hierarchical Structure

The Divine Council: The Divine Council, led by the High Seer, governs the religious and spiritual affairs of the Holy Kingdom of Stanna. The High Seer is believed to be the earthly representative of Zorath, chosen through a complex ritual that includes divine signs interpreted by the council members.
The Clergy: The clergy, consisting of Seers, Priests, and Acolytes, serve various roles within the religious community:
1. Seers: Senior clergy who provide spiritual guidance and interpret divine signs.
2. Priests: Local religious leaders who conduct daily worship, perform rituals, and offer counsel to followers.
3. Acolytes: Novices in training to become Priests or Seers, assisting in religious ceremonies and community duties.

Social Influence

Kalvarianism dictates the social structure and legal framework of the Holy Kingdom of Stanna. The religion’s laws are intertwined with the kingdom's legal system, ensuring that religious doctrine is upheld in all aspects of life. Marriages, births, and deaths are all governed by religious rites, and moral conduct is strictly monitored.
The Owl Academies: Education in the Holy Kingdom of Stanna is conducted in religious institutions known as Owl Academies. These academies teach a curriculum based on the teachings of The Book of Truths and The Tome of Prayer, with a strong emphasis on moral and religious education. Students are also taught to revere owls and interpret their behaviors as part of their spiritual education.

Consequences of Dissent

Dissent or heresy against Kalvarianism is met with severe repercussions. The Nocturnal Order, an elite religious enforecment group whose recruits are chosen from the most devout physically proficient specimens, is tasked with identifying and rooting out heresy. Those accused of heresy face trials and, if found guilty, are subject to punishments ranging from public penance to execution. The Order's militant branch is even highly trained and acts as special forces or agents of espionage in times of war.
