The Elysian Dial

There are few legends or objects so important and so well known that they managed to survive the ravages of The Age of Storms  and yet tales of the object known as The Elysian Dial have managed to do just that.   The origins of the item and who created it are unknown; some legends say that it was created by some unknown divinity in an ancient era, others claim that it has always existed in the world in some form or another, while others still say that the object was created when all of the spirits poured their power together to create it. Regardless descriptions of the item remains the same; it is a small golden disc inscribed with thousands of minuscule runes and adorned with four magical gems of prodigious size. Three of these gems; blue green and white in hue, are arrayed around the top of the disc surrounding the last. This last gem is said to be the largest of the group, and it's hue is said to encompass all the colors known to the world.   It is said that the power of these gems and the runes that connect them is enough to change the world around it in impossible ways. Any type of magic a person could fathom using is accessible to them, no task is too great for it's power. Some legends even claim that the dial is powerful enough to allow a peasant to challenge a god. Legends also claim that The Elysian Dial is so powerful that any who seek to use it are inevitably destroyed by it's power, as though the object possesses some will of it's own. And as many tales there are of the Dial being used for great deeds, there are an equal number of tales of the destruction wrought by it. Islands sunk, cities razed, plagues caused; so prevalent are these tales that few people would not pause before calling upon the power held within.   The location of The Elysian Dial is lost to time. Many claim that the artifact had been long lost even before The Age of Storms, and if it still exists today it must have been lost to the Endless Deep. Never-the-less rumors of the artifact surface from time to time, always causing a rush by desperate scholars and treasure hunters to the area it was 'spotted' and inevitable ending in disappointment and misfortune. Some claim that the fact that even rumors of the Dial are enough to cause such misery is proof enough that the world is better off with the object left in the misty halls of legend.
