Rules of Spellcasting
Adremesian spellcasting has fundamentally remained constant throughout its history. It’s main principle being to channel the natural flow in certain ways to unleash its energy to perform a specific action. There have been 3 distinctive methods throughout the generations, each having a slight variation to the next, but each sharing the same principals.
The first system was intertwined with the dominant lifeforms themselves, the Raxarians. These beings are able to channel the flow through their own bodies to unleash its energy in their desired ways, this leads to quick and powerful spellcasting and a multitude of different possibilities. This is also not strenuous on the soul or body providing that they do not surge the flow through them, channelling a significant amount of the flow through them at once can be a great detriment to their life and so spells too powerful or too frequent will damage both soul and body.
The seconds variant came from the early humans. This method involved marking the natural flow with a symbol, essentially an instruction for how the flow to move through it, which would release the flow’s energy when the caster smashed the symbol, thus surging the flow through the symbol. But this was very difficult process for one to learn. Not only did they have to acknowledge a metaphysical force greater than themselves, but also had to accept their place in it to influence it. Many people required an object that already seemed to have an effect on the flow to draw the symbols, but distinguished souls who truly felt at one with the flow were able to draw up their symbols without such objects. This method produced very powerful and effective channels for the flow but had a few negatives to the positives. The first was that elaborate symbols took a long time for many to create and so would not be effective in all situations and the second was that if the caster did not surge as much flow into the channel that is stored in the symbol, then the flow would backfire at the caster, in order to fill the vacuum of flow created behind it. This caused the caster significant pain, usually of the body but sometimes of the soul as well.
The final variation started to be devised after the fateful battle with the Lord of Chaos and it scrapped symbols altogether. This new process involved the individual moving as one with the flow to stir its movement around them and channel it by constant changes in direction. Once enough energy flows around them, the caster can unleash it in their chosen direction to cast their spell. This method, though quick and easier than the last, produced the weakest spells because energy could be lost as it flows around them as they do not have a fixed channel to surge energy through and instead have to influence its movement in complicated patterns.
