First Magewar

A secret passage was discovered which led deep beneath the earth into a full-blown undercity: The Halls of Alabaster. It was vast, dwarfing in proportion the limited imagination of the butchers and bakers who had chanced to discover it. It was full of treasure, but also lethal traps, terrifying monsters, desecrated altars, and empty houses. Making headway was impossible. The folk wondered why the legendary wizard would build such a labyrinth, and its true purpose remains unknown to thisday to all but a handful of individuals. None know how deep the Halls go, but they are rumored to reach all the way down to the center of the world.   Not long after the discovery of the Halls, the Nine suddenly returned. But something had happened to them in those deep bowels of the earth. They returned corrupted. Changed. Arriving in force, they burst forth from the Halls leading companies of orcs and other monsters, hell-bent on conquering Carandor. All who opposed themperished in what is today known as the First Magewar. They ousted the Tystar line of kings that had been ruling the country in their absence, a calamity from which their line has never recovered.   The Nine ushered in a hundred years of domination, during which they enforced an anti-clerical ideology of pragmatism upon the populace. All worship of the divines was forbidden, and arcane magic was taught to the population. Most wizards in Adranon today trace their families’ origins to that time.
