Velkarin

Patron of Undeath and Ice; Frostmother; Pale Queen Velkarin (a.k.a. The Whispering Frost; The Silent Chill at the End of All Things; The Last Breath; Voice Beneath the Snow)

Worship in the Dominion is often directed toward ancient death and winter deities—particularly Velkarin, the Whispering Frost, patron of undeath and ice. Queen Lysandra herself is considered a near-divine figure among her loyalists, revered as a goddess of eternal cold and dominion over death.

Divine Domains

Undeath, Ice, Winter, Silence, Stillness, Memory, Oblivion

Divine Symbols & Sigils

  • A snowflake with a skull at its center
  • A frozen rose, petals of ice
  • A handprint in rime on obsidian
  • A circle of icicles surrounding an empty space

Tenets of Faith

Velkarin's worship is strongest in cold, death-aligned realms such as the Iceshard Dominion, where she is venerated alongside Queen Lysandra Coldveil, seen as either her emissary or partial incarnation. Her shrines are often found in glacier-hewn sanctuaries, frost-covered tombs, and silent halls of mourning, lit with pale blue flame.

Her priests—called Frostmourns—offer icebound rites, memory laments, and stillness blessings, preserving corpses in enchanted cold and guiding souls into her embrace. Necromancers view her as the source of elegant, unrotting undeath, as opposed to the chaotic decay of other death gods.

Tenets of Velkarin:

  1. Let silence reign where chaos once dwelled.
  2. In death, find stillness; in stillness, find power.
  3. Preserve what is worthy; let the rest freeze and be forgotten.
  4. Life burns, but frost heals. Chill the soul to shield it from pain.
  5. Do not fear the end—it is her embrace.

Favored Offerings:

  • Hair frozen into strands of crystal
  • The final breath of a dying creature, caught in soul-ice
  • Silver mirrors left to frost over beneath the moon
  • The names of forgotten dead, whispered into the snow

In Noctavian texts such as The Ice Psalm, she is portrayed as the eternal mourner, wrapping the world in snow to preserve what she loves. In Wildlands folklore, she is sometimes feared as the ghost that steals warmth from the hearth, though more poetic tellings call her the final lullaby sung to the earth.

Divine Goals & Aspirations

Velkarin is revered as the deity who guides souls into stillness, not out of cruelty but from a cold mercy. She preserves memory, not life. The chill of undeath, to her followers, is not a curse—but a perfected, static state—free from the chaos and suffering of mortality. It is said she first breathed frost into the world to soothe its burning pain, and that undeath is her gift: silence without sorrow.

In her silence, she offers comfort to the grief-stricken and forgotten, and in her chill, power to those who refuse to pass on.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Velkarin is most often depicted as a tall, robed figure veiled in drifting ice-mist, with a crown of brittle frost and a cloak of falling snowflakes. Her face is rarely shown—when it is, it's either a blank mask of polished ice or a death-pale visage with closed eyes, eternally serene. Her breath turns the living still, and her voice is said to be so soft that only the dying or the dead can hear it.

Social

Contacts & Relations

Velkarin is seen as an ancient, aloof power, distant from mortals but not uncaring.

  • She is opposed by fire gods and deities of life, who view her realm as bleak.
  • Among death deities, she is respected as the architect of peaceful undeath—not madness or rot.
  • Some legends say she once loved the Sky-Father, but withdrew when his winds grew too wild and warm.
