Trial of the Charred Flats
The Trial of the Charred Flats is one of the most sacred and brutal rites of passage among the Stormborn tribes—a crucible of survival that separates the storm-chosen from the unworthy. Taking place in the Charred Flats, a blackened stretch of land constantly wracked by electrical storms and crawling with elemental hazards, this trial is seen as a direct communion with the Everstorm, the living divine tempest the Stormborn revere.
To complete the trial is to be claimed by the storm and reborn in its image.
Purpose of the Trial:
- Coming of Age: Marks the transition from youth to adulthood among the Stormborn.
- Divine Approval: Only those who survive the storm unaided are seen as favored by the Everstorm.
- Spiritual Transformation: Many claim to hear voices, see omens, or feel the storm inside their blood after enduring the trial.
Execution
Ritual Process:
- The Marking: Before the trial, aspirants are painted in storm-oil sigils, designs drawn from lightning-inspired patterns by Stormcallers. They are given a single piece of Stormglass to carry—a symbol of clarity amid chaos.
- The Walk of Sparks: At dusk, the initiates are marched to the border of the Charred Flats and left to walk into the heart of the storm alone, without food, water, weapons, or shelter. They must survive until dawn.
- The Night of Storms:
- Lightning strikes randomly, scorching the land in blue-white arcs.
- Wandering elementals, such as Living Sparks or Storm Wisps, haunt the Flats.
- Sky Serpents may fly overhead, their coils crackling with divine judgment.
- Participants may be burned, scarred, or even permanently altered by the experience.
- The Return:
- Survivors who return at first light are greeted in silence.
- They must present their Stormglass, which often becomes fractured or altered, believed to reflect the trial’s spiritual outcome.
- Those who do not return are mourned, but their deaths are seen as a sacrifice to the storm, and their names are etched into Sky-Iron tablets.
Marks of Survival:
- Lightning Scars: Jagged scars resembling forked lightning are revered as sacred marks.
- Storm Eyes: Some return with glowing or storm-hued irises, considered a blessing.
- Storm-Forged Insight: Many gain visions, prophetic dreams, or heightened storm-sense.
Participants
To survive the Trial is to claim one's place as a warrior or shaman. It earns a name, a personal sigil, and the right to wear storm-forged ornaments and wield Sky-Iron weapons. Those who survive are said to have their hearts beat in time with thunder.
It is not uncommon for the leaders of a Stormborn tribe to be chosen from those who not only survived the Flats—but walked back through it a second time by choice.
