Thunderfang
Thunderfang is the mythic apex of the Cliffborn Scorpions, a creature of legend and terror whispered about in the tented camps of Windcloak nomads and etched into the obsidian cave walls of the Everstorm Cliffs. Believed by some to be the first of its kind—or perhaps a mutated survivor from an age before the storms—Thunderfang is more than just a predator. It is a force of nature: a living embodiment of the storm’s wrath, coiled in silence and striking like lightning itself.
- Intelligence: Unlike lesser Cliffborn Scorpions, Thunderfang displays cunning. It is said to bait prey with trails of false tracks, collapse ledges to isolate victims, and even knock down stone bridges with the swipe of its claws.
- Stormcaller's Blood: Legends claim Thunderfang was struck by lightning in the womb and now carries the Everstorm in its veins. When angered, its body crackles with electricity, and the wind around it howls unnaturally.
- Lair: Its domain is rumored to be the Stormheart Hollow, a cavern system buried deep within the cliffs and reachable only during the Eye of the Everstorm—a brief period of calm within the endless tempest.
- Longevity: It is believed Thunderfang has lived for centuries, surviving cataclysms, hunting storms, and even rival Skyfang Raptors. No one who has seen it and returned speaks the same tale twice.
Cultural & Mythic Significance
- The Scorpion Trial: Stormborn lore tells of a final warrior’s rite—to hunt Thunderfang not to kill, but to touch its tail and live. Only three names are recorded to have succeeded, each rising to become a chief or shaman of great power.
- Symbol of Fury: Among Windcloak seers, Thunderfang represents vengeful endurance and untamable power. Its image is invoked in curses and storm rituals alike.
- The Dagger of the Fang: A legendary dagger supposedly forged from a shard of Thunderfang’s molted stinger is said to still exist. It is said to cause paralysis so complete that even thought falters.
In Legends
- The Skyfall Duel: One myth tells of a Storm-Fury Blade-wielding warrior who battled Thunderfang on a crumbling cliff during a skyquake. The warrior died, but not before striking off one of its claws—still displayed today in the Stormcaller Shrine.
- The Stormwright’s Bargain: Another tale suggests Thunderfang once served the First Stormwright, bound by storm-wrought magic to guard an ancient relic. When the pact broke, Thunderfang vanished into the cliffs, its fury unleashed forever.
Physical Description
General Physical Condition
- Size: Thunderfang is said to be the size of a war chariot, over 15 feet long, its claws the span of a grown man’s height, and its stinger longer than a spear.
- Exoskeleton: Its chitin is midnight black, veined with glowing blue stormquartz, crackling with arcs of static energy even at rest. The carapace is described as harder than tempered steel and immune to conventional weapons.
- Eyes: It has six bioluminescent eyes, burning with the cold light of stormfire, able to see through dust, wind, and pitch-black night.
- Stinger: Thunderfang’s tail is massive and jagged, tipped with a barbed fang that glows with pulsing energy. Its venom is said to paralyze the soul, not just the body.
