Throne of Thorns
The Throne of Thorns is no mere seat of power, but a living reliquary of decay and dominion. Grown—not built—from a grotesque fusion of twisted roots, mummified corpses, warped bone, and fungal tendrils, it is the cursed heart of Blackthorn Keep and the physical nexus of King Daerion’s dark sovereignty.
The Throne of Thorns is not merely a seat of rule—it is a parasitic god-throne, a deathbloom from which decay spreads like law, and through which the Withered Wilds are governed in silence and rot.
History
Legends whisper that the Throne was grown from the corpse of a Hollow Elder, fertilized by the blood of a thousand sacrifices—beast, man, and elf alike. Fungal seers claim it is half-artifact, half-deity, and that it hungers when Daerion sleeps.
Some believe it is not Daerion who rules from the Throne, but that the Throne itself rules through him, its will growing stronger with every breathless soul it binds.
The throne rises like a grove of petrified agony, its form asymmetrical and ever-shifting. Jagged thorns jut from every limb, some shaped like claws, others like gnarled antlers. The backrest resembles an open maw, formed from fossilized ribs and coiled bark, while the armrests are lined with cracked femurs and blooming rot-lilies that drip black nectar.
The dais upon which it stands is formed from a rootmass long dead, yet animated by necrotic and fungal energies. Veins of violet moss and luminous mycelium thread through the roots, pulsing in rhythm with Daerion’s own withered heartbeat.
The Throne is not passive—its vines slither out from beneath it, piercing the stone floor, coiling through the fortress, and anchoring into the minds and flesh of those who serve the king. Advisors, servants, and even courtiers are bound to it by ritual and root, their bodies sustained in a half-living stasis, their wills attuned to Daerion’s.
The throne is said to allow Daerion to:
- See and speak through the trees of the Withered Wilds.
- Command rot and fungus as a king commands armies.
- Steal vitality from those bound to his court, extending his undead existence.
- Channel the voices of the dead through its tangled roots.
