Stormmarshal
The Stormmarshal is the highest military title within the Skyborn, the elite aerial forces that serve the Windcloaks and safeguard the skies above the floating isles, thunder-peaks, and open skies of the world. The Stormmarshal is more than a commander—they are a living embodiment of storm and sky, believed to be chosen not merely by merit, but by divine will, as interpreted by the Council of Skyseers.
Appointment
Unlike traditional military ranks, the Stormmarshal is not appointed by political rulers. Instead, their selection comes through an augury of the skies—a series of signs and visions read by the Skyseers, oracles attuned to the Everstorm's pulse. The candidate must also survive the Trial of the Endless Gale, an ordeal that tests their endurance, leadership, and attunement to the storm's fury.
Duties
- Supreme Commander of all Skyborn forces, with ultimate authority over Cloud Wardens, Therm formations, and skyfleet movements.
- Responsible for maintaining aerial dominance, stormborne tactics, and defensive wards against threats from the land, sea, or beyond.
- Commands the Skyspire Bastion, a floating fortress and strategic command post.
- Oversees the training and initiation of new Skyborn through the Storm-Climb and other rites.
Cultural Significance
- Revered as both warrior and prophet of the skies.
- Some believe the Stormmarshal carries the voice of the First Stormwright, or is briefly possessed by the Everstorm itself during battle.
- Stormmarshals are often the subject of ballads, sky-chants, and wind-carved reliefs across floating spires and cliff-face temples.
Notable Holders
- Kaelin Windbrand, who unified the scattered Therms during the Tempest War and rode a thunder wyrm into battle.
- Seraya Vorth, a storm-witch and tactician whose commands were whispered on the wind before her fleets even arrived.
- Thalen Skybreak, believed to have been carried into the Everstorm after his final battle, leaving only his crackling glaive behind.
