Soul Ice
Soul Ice is a hauntingly rare and magical substance formed when the essence of the dead becomes trapped within glacial frost or enchanted ice. It is neither wholly spirit nor wholly matter, but a mystical fusion of elemental cold and soul energy, typically harvested from cursed places, battlefield tombs lost to permafrost, or ritual sites of death magic in frozen lands.
Glowing faintly with inner light—often blue, violet, or sickly green—Soul Ice emits a cold that is spiritual, not merely physical. Those who touch it feel the weight of memory, sorrow, or anger from the souls it contains. It is considered both powerful and dangerous, as careless use can awaken or unbind the trapped spirits within.
Properties
Physical & Chemical Properties
- Soul-Bound Cold: The cold of Soul Ice lingers not just on skin, but in the soul—slowing life energy, clouding thought, and resisting healing magic.
- Magical Fuel: Functions as a potent power source for necromantic rituals, undead constructs, or frost-enchanted weapons. One shard can power a ritual for days.
- Sentient Echoes: Some pieces hum with whispers or moans, reliving the last moments of the souls inside. Occasionally, fragments gain limited sentience or act as minor phylacteries.
- Soul-Tethering: Used to bind souls to locations, items, or constructs. Common in Frostwight creation or by liches like Queen Lysandra Coldveil.
History & Usage
Everyday use
- Necromancy: Fuel for rituals involving resurrection, binding, or communication with the dead. Essential in the creation of Frostwights, Soul-Forged constructs, and Cryoliches.
- Weapon Enchantment: Forged into blades or projectiles that deal cold and necrotic damage, drain vitality, or temporarily sever a target’s soul from their body.
- Arcane Catalysts: Used in spell foci to enhance cryomancy, divination, or spirit manipulation. Also capable of storing spells or memories.
- Undead Empowerment: Used by high-tier undead (like Frostwights or Wraith-Knights) to stabilize form or gain new abilities, including cold auras or soul-leeching attacks.
Refinement
Soul Ice forms under specific, grim conditions:
- A powerful soul dies in extreme cold, especially if cursed, betrayed, or consumed by hatred.
- A necromantic ritual fails, freezing both caster and spirit in a liminal state.
- A battlefield in the frozen wastes goes untouched for decades, and the grief of the dead condenses into magical frost.
Harvesting Soul Ice requires magical insulation, ritual containment, and often, silence—as the spirits within can awaken if disturbed. Mishandling it may result in soul possession, hauntings, or spiritual backlash.
