Dire Wyrm
Dire Wyrms are massive, serpentine predators that haunt the deepest frozen wilds of the Iceshard Glacier and the surrounding subterranean labyrinths. Unlike dragons, they possess no wings, relying instead on raw physical power, ice-coated scales, and a terrifyingly keen sense of vibration to detect prey beneath the snow and ice.
Basic Information
Anatomy
Dire Wyrms can grow up to 60 feet long, their bodies muscular and armored in overlapping plates of frost-hardened keratin. Their heads are wedge-shaped for burrowing, with a crown of backward-facing spines that resonate with the movement of nearby creatures. Their mouths are lined with rows of jagged, retractable teeth capable of anchoring prey too large to swallow whole.
Their breath is not fiery, but instead emits a freezing mist so cold it can cause immediate frostbite and even shatter stone or bone after prolonged exposure. Dire Wyrms have no external eyes—over millennia, they evolved to rely entirely on tremorsense and scent, making them impervious to visual illusions or blinding effects.
Ecology and Habitats
Iceshard Glacier, Frostspire Caverns, subterranean tundra tunnels
Behaviour
Solitary and territorial, Dire Wyrms lie in wait beneath layers of ice, waiting for vibrations to betray the movement of prey. They ambush by bursting upward in an explosion of snow and ice, aiming to crush and coil around their quarry before suffocating or shattering it.
They compete with Snow Terrors and Frostwyrms, and are one of the few predators capable of ambushing or repelling even an Icebeast if conditions are favorable.

Uses, Products & Exploitation
- Iceshard Dominion: Feared and respected. Some Frost Elves believe Dire Wyrms were birthed from the glacier’s wrath itself and see slaying one as a rite of immense honor.
- Nomadic Tribes: Refer to them as “Wyrms of the Deep Cold.” Entire hunting routes shift if Dire Wyrm tunnels are discovered.
- Trophies: Dire Wyrm fangs and spinal shards are forged into weapons that radiate unnatural cold.
Average Intelligence
Though not sentient, Dire Wyrms are highly intelligent for a beast. They show problem-solving skills, such as creating false trails to mislead prey, and avoid ambushes from larger foes. Their immense size, resistance to magic, and subterranean mobility make them exceptionally dangerous to even seasoned adventurers.
