Abyssal Wyrm
Abyssal Wyrms are enormous, serpentine predators that inhabit the deepest and most inhospitable reaches of the Abyssal Chasm. Rarely glimpsed and even more rarely survived, these creatures are living myths—feared by surface dwellers and revered or avoided by the subterranean denizens of the chasm.
Abyssal Wyrms are not simply beasts—they are forces of nature, the primordial spirits of the chasm, guardians or executioners depending on who tells the tale.
Basic Information
Anatomy
- Size: Fully grown Abyssal Wyrms are said to reach lengths exceeding 100 feet, with massive, muscular coils capable of crushing stone.
- Coloration: Their scales are ashen grey to bone-white, helping them blend seamlessly into the mist and stone. Some specimens bear bioluminescent streaks or eyes, glowing faintly in the dark like trailing embers.
- Eyes: Small or completely absent—many Wyrms are functionally blind, relying instead on vibration, heat signatures, and an uncanny sensitivity to arcane resonance.
- Mouth: A gaping maw lined with retractable fangs, capable of dislocating to consume prey whole.
- Movement: Despite their size, Abyssal Wyrms can burrow through loose stone and lurch through the narrow chasm tunnels with terrifying speed.
Behaviour
- Predatory Nature: Apex predators of the deep, Wyrms feed on anything—from Chasm Crawlers and burrowbeasts to unlucky explorers.
- Solitary: Highly territorial, they rarely tolerate others of their kind unless in mating season, during which massive tremors have been reported.
- Ambush Hunters: Lying in wait for hours or days, they strike with sudden ferocity, dragging prey into underground lairs or flooded sinkholes.
- Lifespan: Believed to live for centuries, if not millennia, slowly growing in both size and cunning.

- Blood and Glands: Their bodily fluids are rich in magical trace elements, used in potions of silence, shadow, and subterranean navigation.

Civilization and Culture
Common Myths and Legends
- The Pale Tyrant: Some say there is one ancient Abyssal Wyrm larger than the rest, known as the Pale Tyrant—a creature whose movements cause minor quakes and whose breath saps the warmth from the air.
- Eerie Calls: Their distant cries echo through the chasm, a haunting sound described as a cross between a whale’s song and a landslide. Many who hear it report disorientation, nausea, or sudden panic.
- Death Omens: Among the local tribes, the sound of an Abyssal Wyrm is considered a harbinger of disaster, such as rockslides, monster migrations, or the chasm itself shifting.
Interspecies Relations and Assumptions
To face an Abyssal Wyrm is to court oblivion. Whole parties have vanished in moments, their screams drowned by the rumble of a Wyrm rising. Even experienced delvers speak of "trembling stone" and the sensation of being watched by something ancient and hungry. Many expeditions turn back the moment the Wyrm-song echoes through the stone.
