Conjuration

By literal definition, the act of conjuring is calling upon something; be it a person to beckon them, or, in the more paranormal sense, to summon. While conjuration in the world of Adarus carries a similar meaning, it's mainly used in the magical sense as a lesser form of resonance factor manipulation.   Since the Fall and near-complete disappearance of divine magic (save for that practiced by the nephilim), sentient beings with a propensity for magic can only manipulate the existing world around them rather than create and destroy entirely new existences of matter and energy. There are many varied schools of magic, and "conjuration" is one of them; although, by definition, it is probably the most universal term applicable to all forms of magic. That said, for the sake of brevity, this article will specifically cover the school of conjuration itself and provide two key examples.

Basic Principles

The school of conjuration follows the basic principles of lesser resonance: manipulation through the conscious projection of will, control of the projection through imposed purpose, and dissemination of the exercised control through the relinquishment or alteration of the state of mind. But where the school of conjuration differs from other schools, like invocation and projection, is the practitioner typically does not manipulate hard matter. Rather, they focus almost exclusively on energy: from kinetic, to chemical, to nuclear. But as energy itself is the process of transference, conjurers often need to be versed in the properties of physical constructs and how energy can interact with them in order to make effective use of this school.

Automaton Cores

The ancient chimeras used conjuration heavily in their automatons. These robotic servants were powered with the energy of "souls". Whether this is true has yet to be verified, but still-functioning automaton cores have shown themselves to be full of impressive volumes of constantly fluctuating energy. These metallic spheres were used to power and control larger mechanical bodies (mostly bipedal machine constructs) that would aid in heavy construction or even protect chimeric interests. Even more interestingly, they could be slotted into chimeric computer systems and served as a method of hands-free input in lieu of analog controls.   Most recovered cores have limited functionality, but a few have demonstrated possession of intelligence (whether this is virtual, artificial, or sentient is yet be confirmed).   Chimeric automaton cores are a surviving testament to the ingenuity and technological advancement of the ancient chimeras.

Familiars

The modern replacement of the lost technology of the ancients is the familiar: a creature given form by its creator and embued with the requisite energy to function and obey commands. They are puppet-like machinations of skilled conjurers and possess a top-down intelligence (virtual). They are capable of mimicking emotion, but otherwise do not possess personhood.   Familiars are often small, no larger than common birds, and serve as avatars and allies. They are relatively harmless, but a master conjurer can manipulate a familiar into performing dubious tasks like stealing and sabotage because of their typically small size and subdued presence.   Most familiars are constructed with raw materials like clay, straw, wood, woven fabrics, or soft stone. The kinetic energy that moves them is manipulated entirely by the conjurer, but rigorous practice eventually converts what would normally require constant concentration into an eventual second-nature act of the subconscious.   There are reports of familiars being made from energy, however, which would be a remarkable feat in and of itself as it would demonstrate Einstein's Theory of Relativity working in the reverse of what we're more familiar with: mass being converted into energy through nuclear fission or fusion. The conjuration of a familiar without pre-existing matter and its subsequent conversion into a three-dimensional form would show the opposite: energy to matter. The Odysseus Physics Team very much looks forward to meeting a conjurer with that skill.

Localization

Conjuration is taught by magisters of the Violet College in the Arcanaan Empire, and the Lyceum of Conjuration in the Nasir Dominion—one of the magic colleges of the Library of Sena. Although the school has a lot of potential, it is sadly less popular than invocation, projection, and alteration; all of which tend to exhibit more practical (militaristic) purposes.
