There are many stories about Poimen, and most of the stories appear in many different versions. New stories often get invented, since Poimen is a popularly used by playwrites and bards as a generic "hero character".

Poimen is often interpreted differently in the various stories he features in, and individual storytellers often put their own spin on the character. However, Poimen always has certain key traits; he was a shepherd in his youth, he is curious, and most of all he is brave to the point of recklessness.
