Villarian Journal

The snow has seemingly passed after a long winter. The grass is peaking through the muddied ground and the earliest flowers of the year are starting to bloom. Usually, this is a time of rejoice as the days become warmer and longer. The hardships of winter come to an end, but this year is different. The days may becoming warmer, but I fear there will not be joy for some time.

Villarian has always been a city of freedom, arts, and science. The populace has enjoyed the breakthroughs of modern weave engineering. Mundane jobs are being automatically taken care of by autonomous contraptions. The fey population enjoys freedom of experimentation of a variety of schools of magic. Even the human population benefits from the use of everyday magic items.
The Empire (Sylvan) has opposed the unregulated freedom of magic. It sees it as a threat. The Emperor and much of his staff is human. Emperor Tharin sees the downsides of the freedoms in Villarian. He sees the necromancers stealing bodies from the graveyards. He sees those of the dark arts kidnapping the poor for experiments and sacrifices. These may be a sparsity of the population, but the threat does exist. Its aftermath can be seen in the streets as zombie outbreaks sporadically appear and the slums is heavy with fear.
The real threat though is the power magic gives to the population over the Empire's control. This is why he has sent in his guard to start enforcing the magic licensing laws.

Riots are taking place in the streets. The fey populations are taking a stand and using their magic in the streets to cause Chaos. Our guard has been charged with assisting the Emperor's Hand with restoring order. I do not know how our jails will hold this many people nor how we will control the masses.

Another Riot took place outside of the palace. The protestors were pushing towards the Emporer's line. Rocks were being thrown towards the Empire's men. A large stone struck the head of a Lieutenant and caster. The Lieutenant cast a fireball into the center of the crowd. The smell of burned flesh filled the air. He then ordered his men to kill the rest of the crowd. They pushed forward sword in hand and hacked down anyone in the crowd, regardless of age, race, or sex.

King Guhld order his guard to arrest the guards in the Emperor's Hand. I was tasked with this. We were able to capture 8 of the guard including the Lieutenant, but 4 of their men fell to our swords.

King Ghuld has renounced his allegiance to the Empire. This is the first separation The Empire has faced in its over 800 years of existence. The times are uncertain, but it is known the Empire will surely strike down the upheaval.

Factions within the city are beginning to form. Empire Loyalists fight openly in the streets with rebellious factions. Independent factions set to take their own piece of power by exploiting the chaos. The Furnace crematorium has stopped operation and undead are starting to take over sections of the city.

News is spreading that several countries have followed the lead of Malatrick. Civil wars seem to be starting to take place across the continent.

An army from the Empire has approached from the horizon at the break of dawn. Seige equipment has been set up and the Empire is set to take positions around the city. We have reached the point of war. Captain Lefferick has called me to meet at his office within the Citadel.
