The outskirts Report

General Summary

The darkness… My eyes open and I’m still underground, but not where I last remember. The trance was deep this time…what was my last memory? I don’t recall as it’s like a dream…I killed someone, someone important, and now I’m here.

The meditation was good, though the hum of the spear has dissipated a bit.

Looking around, the Firbolg is missing, so is the magic user. Dead? I don’t know. Bob is here, and he has no friends, so I assume not. Graivis is here and so is Elias. How long have I been out?

My understanding is we are on the 903rd day of this quest. What is the quest? I don’t recall what the main goal was as there have been so many distractions. The Rat King….the dragon? The Dragon! Averness…much to do, but I’ve been told we’re headed to Benzozarrepanz to quest for a belt of some sort in what is now a Drow city. There are other artifacts, and a forge, which once belonged to Graivis’ ancestors.

If these things will help as we push for Averness, so be it. Certainly, as we push toward this city, we will encounter Drow. They live in the underdark for a reason; beneath us, still, I’m drawn to them.

It was apparent that whatever had happened in the last little bit had taken a toll on Graivis. He appears ready, however, and wishes to push on.

We continue down a cramped hallway. It appears this is simply a dug tunnel, not as refined as what I have seen previously, and lined with veins of silver. Graivis believes we are closing in on this city. As he whispers this to us, he also catches movement ahead and motions for us to stop. It’s evident by his gestures there’s three subjects ahead. I see them as well, and it appears they had been traveling the opposite direction and then took a different path. I scout ahead to check.

I clear the corner and look to the left down another tunnel. Three subjects, obviously Drow, are pushing down this path. The one in the middle appears to be carrying something, a chest perhaps? I motion for the others to push up, as there is no time to go back and discuss what I observed.

Graivis takes this to mean quickly, and he pushes forward with purpose. It’s evident to me that the Drow are alerted to this, as the one carrying the chest picks up his pace. Graivis is so fucking loud….as they reach my position, Graivis rushes past me, and we all try to catch up to the three. The tunnel widens a bit and becomes a little more lit as we press on. I don’t believe the Drow have noticed us, but they look around nervously and pick up the pace. What is it they carry? Is it important somehow? Maybe they saved us some work and it’s this belt we’re looking for…

As we push on, the two Drow that appeared to have been escorting the currier stop and turn, aware of us now, and push toward us. Foolish. The currier keeps moving forward. I think that box slows him down, and I’m certain I can catch him. I run toward the Drow and I’m sure they are surprised by it. I feel a rush of energy as I move past them…a ghost, as I misty step and then continue on. I close on the currier quickly, sliding to a stop a few feet past him and blocking his path.

I can see where I had come from as Elias hits one of the Drow with a blast of light. A fiery light comes from Bob and just sails past the Drow while Graivis copies my maneuver, pushing past the two Drow. One gives chase, while the other starts attacking Elias and Bob.

Then Darkness. Somehow the currier created this and I’ve grown sick of this magic. I back away, as I’m enveloped in this thick darkness. As I exit, the currier moved past me…but not far enough. Sadly, despite holding this box, he is quick, and parries my assault as I move ahead of him again.

Graivis moved up and managed to attack this Drow, hitting him hard with his axe. Again, darkness, but this time I’m not in it, and I wait. As quickly as the darkness appears, it’s gone, and I can see Graivis and the Drow are trading and parrying blows. I can hear the other two engaged with the Drow, but I can’t see anything. Hopefully they survive.

I push into the Drow and he’s able to avoid my first strike, but the second hits home and I can feel the spear hum with delight as I take the Drow’s life. He falls from my spear and drops the box. The Drow chasing Graivis has appeared and he’s within striking distance. He’s fast and I’m unable to hit him. Graivis, however, does not miss. Still, somehow the fucker hits me….me! It’s surprisingly weak and not at all what I remember from other encounters. The spear seems excited as it finds the mark again, but it’s not enough and Graivis is going to get my kill. It’s evident the spear is less happy about this than I am.

Sure enough, despite the Drow wildly swinging at Graivis, the dwarf is able to find the sweet spot, splitting the Drow in half in a blinding light. I’m no longer hearing combat behind us….way behind us, and eventually Elias and Bob appear. Bob gleefully makes himself a couple of friends….I learned the third Drow was vaporized. I’m honestly surprised they survived.

Graivis is able to open the chest to find an ornate dagger and a note. Bob reads the note written in the Drow tongue:

“May this add to your treasure hoard as a favor to House Dayin for the deeds to be done.”
Looking at the seal on the note, as well as the clothing of Bob’s new friends, it’s evident they were from House Dayin. I wonder who this was intended for…another house? The Dragon? Hmmm…getting side tracked again. It doesn’t appear Bob knows anything about these Houses, but he can give us some insight into how Drow society works in these cities. The Matriarchy….

As the party confers, and despite his protest, Bob re-writes the note and we put the dagger and note in the box, giving it to one of his friends and sending him off the direction the Drow were headed, while we head back the way we came to continue our task.

I didn’t ask what the Drow wrote on that note. With any luck, it will reach a destination and start some sort of faction war.

Continuing on for some time, we enter a part of the tunnel that opens up to a large cavern, cylindrical, with a number of pillars of earth coming from the ground. It’s like some gloomy, petrified, forest. As we move, we’re surprised by…..children. Fucking Drow children. Before we react, they’re up on Graivis and Bob…but for one. An adult, standing a few meters away and just observing.

In their attack, it’s obvious they’re very weak…this isn’t even going to be a thing. I’m surprised Elias isn’t protesting as Graivis hits the first one and it collapses under the weight of his axe. It was actually impressive.

The adult hasn’t moved.

The children keep pecking at Graivis and I can tell he finds it more annoying than any sort of threat, as he makes quick work of another. It’s almost gratifying to watch how easily he’s dispatching these nuisances.

I’ve had enough of the adult just watching, and move in to attack. I land two hits with the spear and a kick to his leg and he just looks at me as I back away slightly. The dismissive look he gives is an insult. As I’m glaring at him, I can hear children dying behind me, then two blasts come from Elias with one hitting the Drow. He actually shook his head in what appeared to be disappointment…and then disappears. Coward.

I can hear Bob say something and I turn to see the Drow has teleported to him, and then darkness. I can’t see what’s going on, but I can hear it, and it sounds like Bob is dead. More noise, an explosion, and then fire? Surely they’re all dead now, but I can still hear the sounds of battle in the darkness. A short time later, Bob appears from the dark and launches a fireball back into the darkness. That explains the explosion, and this time a different voice cries out in pain. I watch as Elias shoots blasts from his hands into the darkness.

Now I can’t see. The denizens of the underdark and their magical darkness; cowards. Enveloped in this dark matter, I’m suddenly hit with blades…hard. It’s been awhile since I’ve been hit that hard, maybe since the dragon, and it knocks the wind from me. I can hear Graivis say something, and then I can see! The Drow is as surprised as I am, and I waste no time, feeding the spear and then a spinning back hand to his face. He crumbles at my feet, his nose pushed into his skull.

We can barely check their pockets before Bob makes more of his ‘friends’. The designs on their clothing do not match the three from House Dayin, and we find nothing of note. Graivis looks over the two scimitars the adult had wielded. Graivis’ face contorts in disgust as he spits, noting the craftsmanship of the blades is good, but it’s a mix of Drow and dwarven craft…blasphemy. I’m keeping them….a trophy.

I need a rest. Just a minute or two to catch my breath. I underestimated the adult with as futile as the children were. No matter. Soon, I’m rejuvenated and ready.

As we continue down the tunnel, Graivis in the lead, it’s not long before he hears what appears to be crying…a female…further down. His pace quickens and he comes upon a robed female Drow, holding her leg. Imagine my surprise that he’s conversing with her. I was sure she was dead. Instead, she speaks with him, tells him she was out studying, messed up her leg and likely won’t make it back. We learned she was studying ruins.

I note the symbol on her chest is different than anything we’ve seen thus far. Another house, perhaps, or something else…a different company within one of the houses?

I ponder this, only to be interrupted by her scream. Graivis inexplicably has grabbed the woman’s leg and pulled on it. Sometimes I wonder about dwarves…why not just kill the woman? I’ve not known him to torture before, intriguing though. I mean, she is Drow, so I understand. I suggested amputation, and she fires a look at me…she doesn’t like me. Good.

Elias on the other hand, and despite her protestations, lays his hands on her obviously broken leg and she seems to appreciate that, enough so that she relaxes a little. The Drow explains that she was looking for some lost ruins, but a rock slide took her by surprise, breaking her leg. The Drow explains that she fell out of favor with Lolth, and to regain her favor, she needs to find these ruins of a dead god. With this information, Elias lays on hands again, healing her more, and suggests that we could help her.

We learn that the ruins are close, down a tunnel, but up a cliff side. I can make it…it’s high, but not a big deal. I make quick work of the wall, misty stepping the last bit of it. She’s already up here, and it makes me wonder more about her story. Graivis made it, despite all that armor, but it took a lot out of him, poor little fella.

Before us, illuminated in a bluish glow, is an open cavernous room. Inside, a pyramid and a headless statue at the front of it, large brass candle sticks on the walls around this room. The base of the statue has a symbol of a sword made of many daggers engraved into it. I’ve never seen this symbol and I ask the Drow what it is. The Drow states this is the symbol of a long lost god, worshipped by the males of her species, Tiare. Lolth destroyed this god…no male will question Lolth’s power she says.

The Drow says she needs to take this statue back to the city, and it’s evident she expects us to help her with this task. The statue is my size, but marble. I can’t budge this, and I’m really no help to Graivis. He’s barely able to move it from the pedestal as it topples to the floor. Graivis examines the statue, finding a weak spot, breaking it in half with a smack of his axe. The Drow doesn’t object.

Using the candlesticks, we’re able to push the statue pieces toward the cliff edge and throw them over. Honestly, I’d forgotten about Elias and Bob…they never seem to keep up with Graivis and I.

The Drow and I follow, finding the way down without much effort. I wasn’t expecting Graivis to just fling himself off the cliff, but he did, and was more surprised when I reached the ground that he was still alive. The priestess makes it to the ground and pays no attention to Graivis as she expects us to load the statue onto a nearby cart. It’s become more clear to me that in Drow society the females look down upon the males, which explains a lot about Bob.

As the parts of the statue are loaded onto the cart, Graivis climbs aboard, content to rest for now.

There are no beasts to pull this cart, and the Drow continues to give orders, telling us someone needs to pull it. I’m not sure this arrangement will benefit us, but Elias seems confident this temporary partnership will help later. We look to Bob, but more specifically his friends, to pull the cart for the Drow. He’s not happy, but he relents, and directs his minions to pull the cart.

The way is uneventful, and while I’m insulted by this Drow, her toying with Bob at my expense has, for whatever reason, humored me. She ignores the dwarf resting next to her, choosing instead to engage with Bob over partnering with us, and specifically the surface elf.

Surface elf. We’re above you for a reason, I think. She doesn’t acknowledge me at all.

The more she prods him, but the more I understand why the Drow males are fodder. I like her, strangely enough. She went from potential next victim to confident and bossy, yet playful in toying with Bob in short order. The roughly two miles we traveled and her picking at Bob was somewhat relaxing.

During that time, the tunnel widened and the mushrooms began to light the path. This path is well traveled and yet we haven’t run across another soul. With that, the Drow priestess hasn’t given any indication of raising an alarm and leading us to an ambush. Perhaps she’s leading us into the city and can give us some sort of passage? In short order, I learn that’s not the case.

The cart stops and the priestess states that from here, we should let her pass. Another jab my way as she says she can’t be seen with a surface elf. Maybe we should have killed her, but maybe she’s why we made good time. Graivis, groggy from fatigue and broken rest, reluctantly exits the cart, and with that the priestess is gone, but not after a warning that the tunnels are patrolled by more seasoned males. Did she know about the children Graivis murdered?

We move forward and in no time the tunnel opens up more and we can see a main gate, guarded by two Drow guards. A direct assault would be foolish, but of course that’s what we come up with. As we close ground, Elias says something to the guards and they let us pass. I’m not sure what happened, though I’m sure Elias may explain it later. We move up the cliff face and can look over the city of Benzozrrepanz.

Were we here before, or do all Drow cities look the same? Or is it the design of the dwarves? Either way, it’s familiar. There is a forge in the center of the city, and to the south of that is a palace. Another mine is just below us, and to the right is a wall, broken in spots, extending from the cliff face to the north and the other side of the cavern. Siege engines are just outside the wall, but I cannot see any activity to know if they are active or remnants of a previous attack.

We find respite in this area, able to rest as we plan the next part of our quest. Rumor has the Rat King hiding in this area. Only Drow would give that creature protection. The city is massive, and we’re likely to find this belt before we locate the Rat King. Slaves work under the crack of whips below us, and despite being exhausted, it’s evident Graivis is itching to free them. Me too, Graivis, me too.

I settle in to meditation. The hum of the spear is comforting, and the noise helps me focus as I fall into a trance. I can hear the whisper of Vudea and the darkness takes me….
