1,000 year war

No one actually knows how long the 1,000 year war actually lasted. Much of recorded history, magnificent artifacts, and civillations were destroyed during the war. What remains is the stories passed on through generations.   At the start of the war, the Sylvan empire controlled the seven countries of Amrith. The empires seat rested in the country of Zumond. It is said prior to the war, the countries archwizards were creating magic artifacts powerful enough to destroy cities and build new land masses. The ability to create such magnificent magic created an environment in which wonderous magic items of today's standards were mundane. The empire truly was pushing the bounds of possibility.   With such magic is also power. Those holding the great artifacts became weary of each other. The countries stopped working in unison and became crazed with mistrust. As ties broke, so did the advancements. The countries once unified by these advances now won't turn their backs during the stalling.   Those in power could see the strife. They could also see the pain being inflicted on the lower classes. As the elite resided in opulence, the poor lived in squalor. The elite know the power which the lower classes have in magic. To protect order, a law was passed to restrict magic use to authorized officials only. To disobey meant death.   Several years passed and the abuses continued be passed onto the lower classes, now more resembling a slave race. This changed in Malatrick when one being was pushed past breaking. The man, an elf once a collegiate mage now servant of King Ghuld, conducted a ritual 12th level spell.   The elf, Garrick Liatris, spent 4 days awake casting the ritual. After the successful completion, magic ceased to work, mountains crumbles, seas boiled, desserts flooded, and the 8 kings were killed. Knowing well of the cost of the spell, Garrick sacrificed his life energy to cast the epic ritual.   The next 200 years started the 1000 year war and brought on an age of darkness. Garrick's death was not in vain. The numbers massed in secret settlements and underground fortresses. When magic slowly began to return, the people emerged from the darkness and came to the light.   Over the next 800 years, battles were fought to free the all inhabitants of Amrith. As time went on, more factions became created. Those factions sought out great artifacts of the prewar. Once discovered the artifacts were used as weapons of war.   The powerful forces were used to destroy one and another. The great power being used relentlessly over the hundreds of years caused tears in the fabrics of the plane itself. Eventually, the powers and factions destroyed themselves.   Zumond was the only country to avoid much of the war. The Emperor was able to defend the country through the natural jagged pass now known as the Emperor's Last Hold. What lies beyond is known only as the deadlands. Nothing is believed to have survived in the war and magic torn land scape.
