Character Application Process Explained

Achenar uses a character application system as a way to ensure that players are good fits for the server and their characters reinforce verisimilitude.

This has been designed to be a process that cannot be rushed through with any accuracy. All told, we expect this process to take at most one working day to complete, with most folks getting done within an hour or two. So, be patient, and plan ahead for what you need to do, using this guide to help make informed decisions. The application represents your first interaction with staff directly. Be sure to put your best foot forward!

Workflow: Character Application to Roleplay

These are the minimum steps in order that will get your character from your brain into our game! We go into further detail about each step and the application itself below.

  1. Do your research. Review rules, lore, heritages, and professions at the least. We also HIGHLY suggest reading up on our Dice System, as you'll be filling that out.
  2. Sumbit a Character Application Ticket. See the spoiler below for the correct format.
  3. * Make Necessary Corrections based on feedback from staff.

  4. Receive your Approved Rank. After you have made any necessary corrections, staff will award you a new role that gives you access to additional discord channels.
  5. Post your Approved Application in the correct channel for others to see.
  6. Log into the server with the given credentials.
  7. Complete the Welcome Room Questline.
  8. Submit a ticket and schedule your Staff Review to ensure you're fully ready for release into the wider world. Do not post to global, Discord chat channels, or DM staff for release.

Application Details Explained

NOTE: This section does not explain the Mutual Consent Sheet in detail. See the below button for details on it.

A character application becomes a published document for all approved players in the server to see, such that everyone may reference it when considering scene appropriateness and roleplay fitment of character and player. As such, an application is not complete unless all details are filled out completely and accurately, including the Mutual Consent Sheet. "Find out through RP" is not an acceptable answer for any portion of the application.

Mutual Consent Sheet At a Glance

Achenar's roleplay revolves around a social contract between players. It states,
I will not instigate a roleplay scene that violates the consent sheet of any other players involved in the scene currently, nor will I instigate a scene that involves an activity or subject that I do not have as acceptable on my consent sheet.

On Achenar, we only have two answers for our binary portion of our Consent Sheet. Use NO for any hard limit that you do not wish to ever engage. Use DISCUSS for any topic you are willing to consider, regardless of how openly. This is done as a means to protect players and foster communication between players in a scene. YES is not an approved answer on the Cosent Sheet.

Our other section has degrees of interest, and gives players a better chance to express their common interests that are generally permissible here. More details, and definitions, are available on the article on Consent Sheets, Here.

    Affirmation

The final line in the application is perhaps the most important, as it affirms that you are old enough to join the server, as well as your agreement to respect the consent sheets of others and have read and will obey the rules of the server:
Affirmation: By affixing a check mark next to this statement, I confirm that I am over the age of 18 years old. I further affirm that have read the Rules of the server and agree to abide by such, and that I will respect the consent sheets of others. :White_check_mark:

Application Review

Once you've submitted your application, Achenar Staff will review the application in detail. We try our best to be both thorough and timely, since we know you are interested in joining us! Here's what we look for, so that you come in prepared:

  • Is it complete? All entries require either a written response or a proper emoji.
  • Is it correct? SteamIDs, Discord Handles, Character Names, Heritages, Professions, and Consent Sheet Answers must match applicable rules and conventions.
  • Backstory: Have the instructions been followed? Backgrounds need to be in unbroken, English prose, free of spelling and gramatical errors, and follow the conventions mentioned above.
  • Backstory: Is the background appropriate to the setting and lore? This is a general check. Specific references to lore are good, but we do also want you to feel free to add value to the story with your own thoughts. It's more important that your character background is plausible to the setting in the eyes of our Story Team than having your character fit into a cubby hole.
  • Heritage, Profession and Backstory: Overpopulation Check? Achenar is not a 'free-for-all' sort of story approach. As such, we cross-check the current active population on server to ensure we don't get a flood of particular characters that might unbalance the story or economy. This is a stop-gap measure used to keep verisimilitude and player interest for all. Only in the rarest of occasions do we anticipate this ever becoming an issue. Note: Perhaps against initial intutition, The Four & Sixty Heritage will never be overpopulated.
    1. Feedback and Commentary from Staff

Once your application has gone through the review process, Staff will offer you a concise feedback on your application. In general, we do not offer potential remedies (rare exceptions apply, read further), but merely a comment about what needs to be changed. Examples of such feedback look like:

      Discord Name does not match
      Incorrect Heritage
      Character name doesn't conform
      Backstory convention/grammar/spelling failure
      Backstory isn't lore conforming
      Consent Sheet incomplete

We expect players to look at the feedback and review their application in its entirety, and make ALL required changes with minimum further input from the staff. We understand that this is an impersonal approach, but this ensures that all applicants get the same time and attention and that they understand the lore and rules fully, instead of relying on staff to help them 'pass the test'.

Exceptions Where Additional Clarification is Necessary

Ocassionally, something an application has on it makes us realize we had erred or imporperly explained a thing. Things like vague or out-of-date lore, misintrepretation of two implications' interactions, and other such deeper dives into story, mechanics, or our plain baffoonery (we are people too) set up an application for failure. When that happens, we explain what we actually meant fully, so players better understand the correct situation and how to adjust their application to match.

Even more rarely, when the application is correct, but butts into an overpopulation issue, staff will begin a dialog with the applicant to see what options there might be to create a more synergetic aligment.

Finally, staff may find something curious about the application and ask further questions to understand fully what the applicant intends.

      Approval & Rejection

Approval of your application will be rewarded with a new role within the Discord server. This will grant you additional access to channels, including your first stop: Consent Sheets! Post a copy of your APPROVED application to the #consent-sheets channel. Then, when you are ready to login to the server, visit the pinned post in #general for the current server password.

In rare circumstances, staff may see it necessary to reject your application. In these cases one of two things are involved:

    2. Your Character is not a good fit for the server. If that is so, the rejection will read: "We apologize, but we will need to reject this character application. You're welcome to apply with another character concept, if you choose to stay and RP with us."
    3. There is a bad player-server fit. In that case, the rejection will read: "We apologize, but we cannot be your future RP home. We wish you the best of luck and happy gaming."
