Kuman Housing

Houses in Kuma Town are overall similar in design to one another, and designed with climate in mind. They're made out of sand tar, a special material made out of sand, limestone, and fresh water. The tar is similar to concrete and sets fast in the desert heat. Once it bakes in the sun for a day, it is incredibly hard and resistant to nearly anything save for a sledgehammer.   For each room: Design (dimensions, colour, material), Entries (doors, windows), Sensory (smells, sounds, touch, light), Contents (furnishings, valuables), what makes the room special

Outer Architecture

Typical houses are square or rectangular in shape, and are one-story buildings. They have large flat tops with a small raised ledge around the lip, and wooden or metal rods are stuck into the sides to hang banners and canopies from to keep areas and windows below cooler.

Doors and subsequently floors are lifted up off the ground by an inch or two to prevent sand from just coming into the home. Small patios or porches are commonplace where chairs and pithoi are placed. Lanterns are sometimes kept on these patios to welcome travellers who need a place to stay.

Typical Rooms

Central Living Area

This is the area where the front door leads into, usually from the patio. It has a place to cook meals (typically a fire pit on the ground near a well-ventilated corner), cushions to sit, a brush-pad to trap excess sand from the outside, and a colourfully painted ceiling. This is where much of the active-activities happen, be it cooking, weaving, praying, molding clay, or playing instruments.

This room has the most amount of windows, with usually two by the cooking corner and two on the other two walls that touch the outside. It has the door that leads to the outside and a doorway that leads to the rear living area. In the floor, opposite the cooking corner, is a trapdoor leading to the house's food storage.
