Wand of the Archmage

Antler of the Progenitor

The Wand of the Archmage is a unique 'wand' found in the mid 11th era by a delver in The King's Labyrinth. It is considered one of the most powerful magical artifacts on Aanrah, and is currently kept securely in the vault at the headquarters of the Aranorin Mage's Guild.

Description

The Wand of the Archmage is a curve piece of antler-like material around 8 inches long, with one short prong at its base and two prongs at its end. It is covered in a glossy coat of gold, while its core is a deep blue material. A gold base has been affixed to the jagged end for ease of handling and look, designed with a ring of gold spheres and the emblem of Emrul on its 'hilt'. It weighs less than a pound.

Properties

The Wand of the Archmage is one of the strongest focuses on Aanrah, naturally channeling magic and enhancing the user's ability to draw on divine aspects around them. It is sturdy, but not prone to damage - the gold has been reported to have chipped off and been replaced in some spots.

History

Known

The Wand of the Archmage was discovered in the mid 11th era by a unnamed delver exploring the depths of the King's Labyrinth. Originally sold as nothing more then a gold-encrusted trinket, the Wand was initially bought as a souvenir by a young mage of the Guild on his pilgrimage to the Labyrinth. Upon returning to the Guild, it was soon discovered that the Wand had exceptional magical properties, and was taken in as a Guild artifact. It became the well-known tool of one of the Guild's earliest archmages, before being returned to the vault for safekeeping.
It was stolen during the 14th era by a unknown perpetrator, before being returned from being found in a wealthy merchant's collection in modern-day Khondon.
Several archmages have used it over the centuries, before it was officially 'retired' at the end of the 17th era. Over the centuries, scholars and researchers have come to the conclusion that the Wand is almost certainly the missing left antler of the god Szaifudrus, and thus should be considered a holy relic and possibly a weapon best left unused. Repeated sightings of the Progenitor over the centuries have largely backed the theory, with many witness accounts verifying Szaifudrus's damaged antler and similarities in the remaining one with the Wand. It is unknown when or how the antler was broken off of Szaifudrus, but scholars assume it was removed during the initial skirmish between Szaifudrus and his kingdom.

True History

The Wand is, as it is theorized, the missing end of Szaifudrus's left antler. Shortly after being turned into a monster by Emrul and sent into a rampage, Szaifudrus cornered a handful of his castle's inhabitants - including one of his daughters, a knight, and his squire. Szaifudrus killed the knight, but the squire retrieved his mentor's sword to give Szaifudrus's daughter, his love interest, a chance to escape. Though the squire did not last long and ultimately was unable to stop Szaifudrus from killing his own daughter, he was able to snap off the end of Szaifudrus's antler with the sword. It was the most damage Szaifudrus took during his first rampage. Emrul is the only being with the knowledge of the exact event - Szaifudrus himself is unable to recall through his rampage the exact nature of how he got the injury.
Emrul still questions how the squire managed to break the antler off - if it was a moment of weakness in Szaifudrus's new form, or if it was a act of metaphysics from the squire's selfless sacrifice to save his beloved.
