Galigul

Galigul, the city on the cliff, is the second largest city in the expanse.

Demographics

Primarily Humans and Dwarves. Elves before the great event rarely made it down to the area where the Galigan's civilization began.

Government

The city is managed by the Bright, Bright Andrus Werff. A Bright in name, his function is much less divinely seen as the Brights of Qu'sra. He even has a higher up on this plane of existence, The Executive. The Executive resides in Esper, however. The leading company that owns much of Galigul is known as Celicter Co. The result is a shockingly similar culture to Qu'sra but warped towards hyper-capitalism.

Defences

Walls and a well regimented standing army, that not only protects, but actively tries to quell monster attacks from the Expanse. Being on the side of a cliff, however, was the original defense.

Industry & Trade

Iron, steel, and the goods they produce are the main products of Galigul. The buildings are sooty, but the houses still cling to the sides of the cliff to this day (even if they do sway a bit)! Coal is also mined, but it is mainly used to drive the iron industry. In addition to these resources, monsters are actively hunted by some of the more daring residents of Galigul, so there's more of a trade in creature meat (Scruff) than in Qu'sra.   Aside from that, the city government makes money of citizens and those visiting from other settlements by charging them a GCP membership fee on either an annual or weekly fee structure.   Membership comes with many benefits:
  • Protection from monsters by our world-class military
  • Access to Galigul's exclusive and one-of-a-kind shops and services
  • Dining experiences like none other in the Expanse
Gold Club Membership gets you even more, including:
  • Once a month access to Esper for high-end shopping all year around.
  • Access to some of the more exclusive floors and businesses of the city, ones regular members aren't allowed in!
  • An annually rewarded gold (plated) token, stamped exclusively for gold club members. New designs every year!
Food & Drinks   Beer: Nimble (Lager by Celicter Co), Earthquake (Ale by Celicter Co), Goat's Milk (Milk Sout by Drunken Goat), Milk of the Gods (Milk Stout by Celicter Co)   Notable Food: Seafood - a big part of the diet of Galigul in the last two centuries has been seaweed, crustaceans, and fish; Seaberries - Not really a berry at all, seaberries are fluid filled sacks picked off of algae grown in the pools beneath Galigul and near Esper. The berries have a salty, yet mildly sweet and fruit flavor; Scruff - Prior to the larger infusion of fish into the city's diet, a large amount of food was from monster meat, things killed in the expanse sold colloquially as Scruff. These days it's still widely consumed, but is more of a delicacy or for festive occasions, particularly those around the citys founding.

Infrastructure

The pride and joy of Galigul is the massive elevator system that makes stops at each floor every minute. The huge cars allow for even wagons to board swiftly, and exit with a push. The system is chaotic and can get physical, but how else are you going to quickly ascend or descend 1850ft in 20 minutes?   The most recently completed major infrastructure project is the road between Galigul and Esper. Due to the constant presence of guards on the road it is probably one of the safest trans-city roads in the Expanse.   Coinage   Galigul, Esper, and the other settlements in the area run on the same currencies. The obverses of the coins all feature the same featureless, mask-like bust of The Executive, in different outfits in each denomination. The reverses feature different things as follows:
  • Copper - The Celicter Co brand seal of a Sea Eagle. Executive outfit: A wreath on head with tassels and simple clothing.
  • Silver - The current Bright at the time of minting. Executive outfit: A diadem of flowers and pearl, gold neck braces, and a patterned sash.
  • Gold - An illustration of Sacrovir kneeling outside the city gates. Executive outfit: A golden radiate crown and intricate gown.

  2. Smith's Guild - The Metalbeards: A largely dwarven guild, the Metalbeards are a raucous group, many who also functions as civil engineers for maintaining the city
  3. Hunter's Guild - Creature Division: Once one of the most popular guilds in the city, Creature Division has seen a drop in membership with the decline of Scruff as a food source. Also with the killing of a lot of the weaker creatures, only more deadly things have been reproducing, making the job even more difficult for guild members. None-the-less admission is easy for Galigul city members and allows access to the same target request as those in the military!
  4. Tinkerer's Guild - Screw and Bolts: A surprisingly secretive organization. Because of business competition in the city, inventors must take a very strict vow to not steal one another's ideas. Initiation is intense and not known to anyone but the initiates.
  5. Thieve's Guild - Twilight Legion: All of the pushing and shoving of life in Galigul leads to a number of pickpockets in the city. One day a few centuries back, they decided to get organized. Some of them anyways...

History

The citizens of Galigul originally started in the city of of Sacrovis, to the North. The city was spared for their Bright, Bright Sacrovir. He sacrificed himself by standing outside the city gates to be destroyed in the blast. Slowly, the citizens were driven from Sacrovis by the demons that sprang forth from blackness, the failure of the crops, and lack of water. After 103 years of moving from settlement to settlement, the city of Galigul was finally founded on the cliffs of what once used to be a great ocean.   It is right before this, ~95 AoD, that Celicter Company was established. First, their services were that of settlers, then they rented out guards and soldiers, and soon the Salthar mines were established. This helped the company grow its empire until it began the first of its citizenship schemes about 10 years later, the founding of Galigul. Originally citizens of the settlements would pay a monthly fee to pay for the groundwork infrastructure of the city to be laid. The benefit is that it came with the long-term promise of a free plot to build a house on. The fees were always relatively minimal and came with that guaranteed Celicter Co protection people of the settlements had come to rely on. After building the city they brought back a popular title to fill the role of mayor, the Bright.   Esper was established in about 237 AoD. It's bordered by water on three sides and was said to have been specifically selected by the executive himself.

Tourism

People who reside in settlements are usually who visit the city. Tourists are required to pay for the weekly city pass to have access to all of the wonderful amenities offered in Galigul.   There are a number of world-class hotels to stay in:
  1. Seaside Heights - connected to Flying Fishes
  2. The Sparkling Chain - connected to The Weak Link
  3. The Mellow Lute Inn - owner: Lillian Thrane
  4. The Woolly Goat - connected to the Drunken Goat

Architecture

The city itself is an architectural marvel. Many large, multi-storied buildings suspended on the side of a cliff. This is made possible by the great steel work produced by the smiths of the original town of Sacrovis and later the founders of Galigul. Each building is bolted into the cliff side and wired into surrounding buildings to help stabilize them and take weight off the structure as a whole. Many of the buildings have artwork and mosaics on them, usually of intricately woven defoliated plants. This is an attempt to manipulate the hallucinations caused by Salthar, which many residents are frequently using.   The top floors are fancier buildings, highly sought after for their craftsmanship and history. The few upper floors are restricted to gold club members only unless on a guest list of one of the residents there. A breach will result in guards from every floor descending upon the floor under assault. This isn't always quite so quick a response time for the lower floors.   The very bottom floors are devoted to industry as a lot of the raw materials come from ocean level. The mines, wood, and military camps are generally all positioned on the ocean level, with additional military installations at the sky and central levels.
