White Flowers
White flowers are a recurring symbol throughout the narrative of A Star's Fall
Symbolism
Depending on the circumstance, white flowers in A Star's Fall represent various things, though they always represent similar ideas. (It's important to note that the type of flower has no significance, so long as they have white petals).- The flowers often represent innocence when they are related to certain characters, such as Bel and Lucelle Étienne.
- Similar to representing innocence, the flowers sometimes represent something "heavenly" or pure.
- The flowers represent vulnerability.
Occurrences
Bel's Death
- Prior to the death of Bel, Dosią Étienne gives her a hairpin of two white roses. Dosią relates the beauty of the flowers to the beauty Bel had before she started giving her blood to humans to heal them of Plaga Mortis.
The Death of Charles Étienne and Dosią Étienne
- When Solomon drives Lucelle Étienne away from Aviellers, France, white petals are stirred up in his wake, and Charles Étienne remarks that "perhaps the petals lead to the angels", likening both Lucelle and Solomon to angels.
- The night her parents died, Lucelle Étienne, unknowing of the impending doom, brought her parents a handful of white flowers. When Lucelle is then taken by Charles Étienne, Dosią Étienne makes the decision to use her final moments to fight for Lucelle when she realizes how helpless and vulnerable flowers are to the harshness of the world, comparing them to her own daughter.
- A representation of flowers meaning innocence was extremely prevalent when Lucelle was young, prior to her parents' deaths, when she still had no idea of her magic or that her mother was a Star.
