Bel's Death
Themes
- Dosią Étienne's initial love of the earth and its inhabitants is shown deteriorating as she realizes what the humans have made Bel do for their gain.
- The symbolism of white flowers is introduced. It first appears when Bel sells white flowers to the townsfolk, which parallels the fact that, later, she literally gives them herself when she gives her blood. The symbolism appears a second time when Dosią Étienne gifts Bel with a white-flowered brooch, providing contrast to Bel's fading beauty due to her sacrificing her blood.
Structure
Exposition
- Dosią Étienne, Ćewla, and Bel live together in a small cottage out in the countryside of France. There's a small town near them which they often go to to sell the vegetables and flowers from Bel's garden and buy food.
- During one of her outings to the town, Bel learns of Plaga Mortis and Starblood, and decides that since she's a Star, it must be her purpose on earth to help eliminate the plague in any way possible.
Conflict
- Bel wants to give her blood to the humans in town that are afflicted with Plaga Mortis so that they might live.
- Wary of the humans and their idolistic view of the Stars, Dosią Étienne and Ćewla warn Bel not to do so.
Rising Action
- After Bel begins to give her blood to the few ailed townspeople, more and more citizens from other nearby towns come to her in hopes to be healed. Dosią Étienne and Ćewla begin to show disgust at the fact that the townsfolk treat Bel like an "angel" or "goddess" despite the fact that they ask her to harm herself.
- Due to her loss of blood, Bel begins to develop scars and is soon bedridden.
- While Ćewla takes care of Bel, she feels that she won't be able to stop Bel from helping the humans. However, when Dosią Étienne goes to give Bel a gift of a white flower brooch, she bursts out at Bel, scolding her for sacrificing herself for people that don't truly care about her. After seeing how much Bel cares for the humans, Dosią Étienne decides to take Bel's place and give her own Starblood instead.
- After witnessing the humans' desperation firsthand, Dosią Étienne feels herself slowly coming to resent humans.
Climax
- One day, a mob comes to the town and demands to see the Star, claiming that their citizens have been dying left and right because of Plaga Mortis. Frightened, the townsfolk give away the stars' location.
- When the mob arrives at their cottage, Dosią Étienne and Ćewla decide that Bel must hide while they fight off the mob. They learn that the mob thought there was only one Star, but now wishes to kidnap both of them. They shoot at the two with Silverthorn bullets, managing to stifle their magic.
- Rather than see her friends kidnapped, Bel decides to sacrifice herself. The mob lets Dosią Étienne and Ćewla go, while Bel is taken away to the city.
Falling Action
- Enraged and frightened that they may never see Bel again, Dosią Étienne and Ćewla decide to track down the mob.
- When they arrive at the city, Dosią and Ćewla manage to track Bel's location down, but find that she's already dead. In their grief and anger, the two kill Bel's kidnappers, but fail to track down one man; the one who led the mob and eventually killed Bel.
- Dosią returns to the town, and burns it to the ground, since she blames the townsfolk for leading Bel towards her death.
Resolution
- Still grieving over the loss of their friend, Dosią Étienne and Ćewla vow to avenge Bel by killing the man that ended her life. They find themselves in Paris, France, where they join the underground forces of the White Talon.
